DNA in urine??!!

Unless Mr. Smith has a kidney disease or some other illness that would cause him to shed epithelial cells, he will not have any cells of any kind and no DNA in his urine. How many people missed this? The writers, director, producers, everyone on set. And everyone on this board? Oops.

I think Mr Brooks knows that, but clearly bluffed here, to stress Mr Smith. He was sure that Mr Smith didn't know that (or at least was too nervous at the time to think that far)

reply

^Couldn't agree more. Mr. Brooks says this because he knows that Dane Cook's character would very likely believe that it would have his DNA in it. End of story. Cook's character is a pretty simple-minded guy who is clearly letting the situation get the best of him, and Mr. Brooks uses this to his advantage. IMO, the average person would not know if urine contains DNA or not. He has to take Mr. Brooks at his word here.

Everyone sheds epithelial cells. The bladder and urethra are lined with epithelial tissue. There's no way you wont find any cells in urine and only a few cells is needed for a DNA analysis. More often than not you can do a successful DNA test on urine. Some blood cells isn't uncommon either even with a perfectly healthy individual.

I don't believe you're a doctor.

Since this urine trailed down his leg, one could easily assume it picked up cells and possibly hair.

I figured Mr Brooks told Mr Smith this knowing Mr Smith would not be smart enough to question it, and simply go along.

reply

So?! Mr. Brooks is not a doctor, the character thought they could find DNA in urine. It was never confirmed that they really found DNA in Mr. Smith's urine.

Non-pathologic urine can contain cells mate... Only in large quantity cells in urine are a sign of a pathologic process

reply

Yes, DNA can be detected in urine.
