That last scene was so extraneous

It was a good movie and then they had to do a voiceover that really does nothing. Make Ray get shot lethally (or at least more obviously lethally) if needed, if you wanted to rule out his survival. Harry offing himself could've been the perfect fade-to-black.

No it wasn't

I thought the voice over at the end was interesting, and quite fitting. The movie starts with a voice over as well, it feels like it's all being brought full circle. On top of that, it gives the scene an extra surreal quality, as Ray is stuck in this limbo between life and death at that moment. It always brings me back to that scene in the church with Ken, where they talked about Purgatory. It seems to me that the writer intended for Bruges to be a kind of Purgatory place for Ray, and the final scene helps solidify that with the surreal atmosphere and the strange imagery on that film set where he gets shot. My opinion anyway, take it any way you will.

You're wrong

All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain...

That voiceover completes Ray's arch. We learn that he wants to live, which is what the character has been struggling with throughout the entire film. The film ends ambiguously because it is not necessary to show whether he lives or dies, as long as it is shown that he WANTS to live or die.

I think it is absolutely necessary to have something more beyond Harry's suicide to complete Ray's arch.

I think the OP just wanted to use the word "extraneous" while talking about a movie.
