Is this movie racist?

Before I state my reasons for this question, let me say three things:

1) I'm not trying to troll. This is an honest question.

2) Since this is a racial question, it may or may not be important to state that I'm a white male. I truly have no idea if that makes a difference or not.

3) I actually like and enjoy this movie. I'm not trying to hate on it.

Most, if not all the other Disney princesses are actual princesses, and end up with the prince and a palace. Most of them were white, even the mermaid.

The one black "princess" is not a princess at all, but a working class girl. She doesn't end up with a palace, but a restaurant. Sure, she becomes a princess in the end, (and I don't want to encourage materialism) but why does the black princess end up with less? Seems like a bit of a bum deal.

Mulan was never a real princess either, and she was Chinese!

Pocahontas was a princess ( albeit not totally white) and she died :/

Belle wasn't a princess either - her father was a poor inventor that lived on the outskirts of town. She only became a princess when she married the prince.

reply

Technically, Cinderella was not a princess either. Pretty sure she married into royalty...

I think this film was trying to be feminist. Tiana is independent. She works hard to make her dreams come true and does not rely on stars, unlike some. The writers were treading a fine line with the mother talking about what "matters most", but I suppose it could be argued that a great career is not worth as much without love in your life.

I suppose it is based on the character's personality. She never really seemed to want to a princess and wanting to have your own independence and make your own way in life isn't a bad thing to want to have.

I don't call it as a racist thing at all because you get women of other cultures that would probably want that way of living. It just happened to be that character. To be independent woman with her head firmly on her shoulders is definitely something to be angry about but more something to be proud of.

Maybe call me naive for this opinion but that's just the way I feel about it.

I wouldn't say it was negatively racist. I mean, it seems obviously anti-racist. It does seem a bit racist to the Orientals, who seem to have smaller noses and darker skin, as opposed to being free, not Jewish (who don't seem to have as big of noses,) with big noses like as a big part of the face, must be more like Caucasian except has that wild stuff. I am a bit confused as to why Indonesia would be considered as it is, a place where they care @ everything. In the end, I'd say more Chinese experience racism than any other ethnicity. You can put together the landmass of the other Oriental countries, and you'd have to add Indochina separately so as not to throw off the percentages.. I mean, Prince Naveen, must have been either Spanish or Indian. That lets me know that the Middle Easterners are appraised above those. The other races seem to be Jewish, which I believe is Caucasian, and indian as in Native American indian, which seems to be like India, in fact, except longer, thicker noses on some that look younger. I'm not sure what my nightmare is, guessing the 1s up north are more stressed out. Like the 1s by Canada, for instance. I know Polynesia can be compared to either holding itself up behind Indonesia or like how Egypt and Arabia are like Yin and Yang (sp?) If you saw this movie that was out in like 2011, they showed someone from Egypt who looked Middle Eastern with something over her head but maybe more in a wild Arabian feel. Like I said earlier, it's the real "Middle" East that is "free" in spirit to be in fresh air and accumulate strong noses, like I'm trying to do, as well.. I worry most about people finding they have Jewish blood. It seems like Vietnamese insofar as they seem like ancient people from like Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, I guess the more fair of the Middle Easterners. I wonder why the more casually revealed cultures in the Middle East have such strong noses and like well-put together bodies. That reminds me of practicing gymnastics.

That isnt trolling. What you mean is flaming.

And I dont get how your question is racist or how any of that is. Disney has been nearly raped by political correctness to the point that it's almost desperate to please all minorities (an impossible thing to do) so it did its best to make as anti-racism a movie as possible. At best the one thing you COULD call racist is the fact that Tiana looks like a dark-skinned, wider nosed version of Belle, a Caucasian girl. but this is because the real racists were screaming about how "racist" it was to make Tiana look like a realistic black girl with more common African features (fuller lips, darker skin, kinkier hair, etc.) with a completely realistic for the era name like Maddy (seriously, Tiana would have been considered a rather outlandish name back then when common names were like Ruth, Addy, Mildred, etc.).

Hmm. I forgot the last point I was going to make. But I'll say this, this movie is a fine example of submitting to political correctness agendas and in doing so actually made the character of Tiana and her setting less realistic than it would/could have been. I wish they had kept her as Maddy the maid and made it closer to the fairy tale, of which it is next to nothing like. I still love it, though.

Oh, I remember: it isnt a good idea (if you ask me) to give out your own info when discussing racism on a place like this where manyPC extremists lurk waiting to pounce on you for being a "privileged" white male who is ignorant about how racism towards blacks is. Or whatever, their arguments and complaints generally change a lot.

I'm not sure if it's racist. Problematic, yes. But most of the problematic points had to be pointed out to me by black people. I never noticed it on my own.

The part they seemed most annoyed with, was the fact that Tiana was a frog for the majority of the movie. That part irritated the hell out of me too. I don't remember the princess being turned into a frog in the original story, was it really necessary to do that? Tiana was beautifully designed.. it was a waste to me, lmao. We gotta spend the majority of the movie watching her as a frog.

Though it would've been hard to turn into a full length movie.. seeing as "the frog princess" is a short story. why did they even have to pick that story, lmao. I honestly think it would've been more interesting if the story was set in Africa. Then they could've avoided the topic of racism (it isn't bad to talk about race/racism in movies, but I hated the way they did it. It was really awkward)

reply

^agreed with what you said.

also i dont think the movie openly address racism would be wrong. except they didnt because they know the crapstorm that would be triggered by people like jesse jackson and the website Jezebel

lets all just hope we get a sequel where she is NOT a frog =)

You're hideous and sexy!

reply

No not a sequel. With the exception of Toy Story, most Disney sequels are just terrible and bring shame to the original.

But no I don't think this movie is racist. I also don't believe she had less then the other princesses. She not only got the restaurant she's always dreamed of but she snagged a prince in the process. Plus this story is a lot more modern then the other princess movies which took place either in the 1800's or even much earlier then that. So it makes sense for Tiana's story to be more about working towards a career rather than just getting married.
