Would have preferred her being an African princess

Yes, I think it would have been better for the first disney "black" princess to be an African princess. It would have been nice to see a story taking place centered around African mythology - with people. I'm sure that many tribes and nations have myths and legends like that, so why didn't disney adapt a story from one of them?

Having this story take place during a time of segregation, when black people could only work as domestics was not necessary. If every other disney princess had a movie centered on their traditional cultures, then why not show the glory and richness of Africa through the eyes of a princess?

reply

And if they showed her in tribal garb, dancing around to African drum music the world would shriek and call it racist.

reply

I can't imagine why. If that's part of the culture then that's how it should be shown. Unless someone is completely ignorant, then there would be no reason to think that way.

reply

because people love to cry racist, especially the people who think they suffer the most from racism (ie minorities typically) it is NOT racist. nor was how Tiana was originally supposed to be- darker skinned, kinky haired waitress named Maddie. that was how black women were! they STILL have dark skin/kinky hair! that is not racist, but it IS racist to "whiten" her up into how se is now, all the while claiming her original (and much more realistic) design was racist. I'm not black but I'm way more offended people think coarse African hair and dark brown skin is somehow racist- and that's from the people claiming to want racial equality and uplift minorities!

anyway, I totally agree. what was the point of making her American? Why not make Jasmine Arabic-American while you're at it? Maybe her dad is an oil sheik who moved to America like Tina Hakim Babams dad (if you read The Princess Diaries). Or Mulan's family moved here in the 60s and dealt with being the only Asians in their all-white Californian neighborhood. Oh, because that's racist to not have their stories set in the countries they're descended from

Tiana as a proper African princess would be cool, regardless of if they stuck to TPATF story or went with another. Next thing you know, Hispanics will ask for a Latino princess and we'll get another Cinderella type story set in the Bronx instead of something cool and realistic like an Aztec princess who hates human sacrificies or something.

I love Jesus AND Jesus-hating atheists and am 100% proud!

reply

I agree.... but you know the PC crowd, made up of 99% idiotic white kids who think they have the right to be offended on the behalf of minority groups, would have complained like they do about anything.

you make it sound like all black women look the same which is pretty stereotypical. Not all black women have dark skin and kinky hair..even back then!! There were also light skinned blacks just as it is now. For example, the Louisiana creoles and mulattos. Beyonce's mother is descended from Louisiana creoles. There are some blacks that were born with curly hair..not kinky. I know this girl from Ethiopia and she has naturally curly hair. Yeah, black women still have kinky hair but that doesn't mean that all of them choose to keep it naturally kinky. And the majority of the black women have processed their hair and it doesn't mean we are trying to "whiten" ourselves, but we just want our hair to be more manageable...If Disney really wanted to "whiten" Tiana to make her look more like the other Disney princesses, then they would not had chosen to give her more typical Black-African features like widening her nose.

now the pressure is on for the first black prince

... and for once that they had a Black heroine, she had to spend half the film being a frog.

"Darth Vader is scary and I The Godfather"

reply

I agree with you, but...who would watch it?

Minorities, sure, but I doubt very many whites would pay to see something so culturally accurate unless the main characters were lions and a meerkat and warthog were used for comic relief. Oh wait..

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

reply

I think you'd actually be surprised, everyone I know that watches Disney movies watch them for that fact that they are Disney and we enjoy all their stories. I would have enjoyed it more if they had a African Princess with a story along those lines... One of the reasons I love these movies is to see the different girls and there cultures. A Princess is a Princess no matter what she looks like or where she comes from. Hell most of my favorites arnt even my ethnicity but I love them the same as the ones who are:) basically yeah you'd have people who might not watch it but overall I think there are tons of people who would watch it because its a Princess movie done by Disney.

I agree, I think it would've been better. New Orleans was cool, but for the first one, they should have stuck more with the culture.

reply

New Orleans is culture...the jazz music, cajun food, and voodoo even though i'm not into the voodoo stuff. It creeps me out. I like the movie as it is except the voodoo stuff.

I agree. That would have been much better. Still a good movie, though.

reply

Who says that Disney still can't make an animated movie centered around west African culture? I'm surprised that they haven't by now because of all the history and stories that has come from that continent.

reply

Because a true African story would've shaken white people up too much.
