the only thing that would be at all 'racist' would be

white-ifying Tiana like they did. Compare her now to the original pics- which I prefer because she actually looks unique and not just like a black version of Belle, Ariel and Jasmine- to before. Also, Maddy is a racist name? No. I don't think the name Tiana was even thought of back then. Making her actually look realistically black is not racist. Trying to making her a black version of the more recent princesses and pretty much implying kinky hair and dark skin are "racist" actually is. It makes no sense for those politically correct people to complain about anyway- if they want it to be PC for black people, what exactly is wrong with having a black heroine who actually LOOKS black an dis believable for that era (ie being a waitress/maid named Maddy)?

Because it just seems stereotypical. To originally make Tiana as a maid just shows that Black people haven 't been making any progress since. They just want Disney to give a positive representation of a beautiful, young black woman making progress in life. And Maddie sounds plain compared to Ariel and Jasmine. Tiana is a beautiful name. It really annoys me that people on here are complaining about Tiana not looking black enough because Disney chose not to have her hair "kinky". It's like saying black women are perming their hair to make themselves look white. The majority of black women today and back in the 1920s dont even keep their hair naturally kinky because it is very hard to manage. I wish people would stop being so damn fussy about her looks and just be proud that Disney decided to introduce a black princess in their lineup cuz it's been long overdue.

The name "Maddie" was considered to close to the term "mammy" which is considered racially insensitive to black people, if not completely racist altogether.

Although I know two of my friends' little girls who are named Maddie (or rather Madeline, but called Maddie) who were very disappointed with this development.

reply

Well, Addie or something then. Almost any name of the era, like a Biblical based name (Mary, Ruth, Esther, etc.) would have been fine. I never even noticed the similarity to Mammy but I can see why they'd think that.

I think people are too obsessed with racism, though, mostly Americans. Gone With the Wind is constantly criticised as racist yet most people love it still.

I LOVE the name Maddie and can't stand the name Tiana. I would go as far as to say why would you do that to a child? Of course, like all names it comes down to personal preference. No one names their child something that is stupid sounding in their opinion. So, I call B.S on the name controversy and think people need to GTFO it.

PATF is an awesome movie and I so loved it. What I don't love is people yammering on and on about race. Can't people just enjoy the movie?! I mean look one people and there are people pitching a fit that her hair wasn't, look the other way and there is another group screaming that kinky hair would have been stereotypical. Disney can't win! Maybe these ridiculous complaints are the reason this amazing movie is so underrated.

*I replied to you because you brought up the name :)

Whiteify?

Yeahhhhh she just looks soooo white.
Her skin is paler than Belle's and her hair moves like Ariel's.

Aha.
Hahahaha.
Yeah ok bro.

You said it, not me.
Aha.
Hahahaha.
Yeah ok babe.

I don't think you actually read my post. I forgot teh pulitiklie currekt term is "whitewashing". She looks almost exactly like Belle with a wider nose and darker skin. Calm down. And maybe learn what "white" means.

LOL YOu're so ignorant on black features.
I'm sorry, did you expect them to make your little stereotypical form of a black woman?
Ariel also looks like Belle. Tiana, Ariel and Belle were-- here's a hint-- animated by the same person. That doesn't make her 'whitewashed'.

I wouldn't say it's drawn in a white way, yes it looks a little like Belle and Arial but they all look individual.

If the character was real I imagine she'd look a little like Zoe Saldanaor. Who isn't white...

Also seeing as Tiana is a frog during the majority of the film I'm not sure why you're so bothered nor why it matters.

reply

Making one post is "so" bothered? Then wouldn't you be so bothered too, to reply?

Not to sound rude but I don't think half of you actually read anything I said, just saw "Tiana" and "white" and made up the rest yourselves. I thought it was clear I was trying to make a point about the PC people calling it racist when it clearly isnt, at best making Tiana look like a black version of Belle is all you could call that.

And yes, she's a frog. What does that have to do with beans?

reply

Giving her a stereotypical full mouth and coarse hair would have been racist, they were right to change it as they did. Giving her a "Mammy" appearance is offensive as *beep*

I do agree she looks too much like Belle and Ariel (and Jasmine, who also looks white) for comfort though. Srsly Disney, why are you so scared of making a beautiful colored woman who LOOKS like she is of color? Why must everyone have European features? Even Pocahontas is based on Naomi Campbell (black) and Christy Turlington (white-Hispanic).

My issue isn't that though, it's portraying Charlotte as a white savior to poor lil' Tiana.

reply

What did Charlotte do in the movie that saved Tiana?

reply

"giving her a stereotypical full mouth and coarse hair would have been racist"

but if thats how the majority of African Americans look, how is that racist?

if they were making a Hispanic female main character from i guess Puerto Rico, would'nt you expect them to want to make her look as Puerto Rican as possible? And if your answer is no, then what if they were like "No, let's draw her as if she was a Anglo-Eurpoean girl and then just give her a darker skin color."? i think Hispanics would be more insulted by that then the character actually having Hispanic features.

i dont understand why some black women are so sensitive on this topic. A lot of black women have full lips and coarse (natural) hair. of course i'm not saying all do, just a lot.
