No, they run around in circles. Seriously. The CGI is pretty bad in the film when it is used, so I guess they didn't dare try and cell* the image of flying zombies.
I saw the film without reading the book, and thought it was OK...not great, not terrible. I rated it 5/10. But now I'm half-way through the book and realize just how disappointing people would find the film if they've read the book first. Tons of important things just aren't in the film, and it has some ridiculous changes such as the man in the red hoodie is one of Clay's characters in his portfolio, but it's never explained why (and everyone else sees the same guy too, as if Clay's some kind of fortune telling psychic). It's a very bleak film and has none of the make-good-of-a-bad-situation charm the book has.
It also doesn't touch at all on the hive-mind intelligence that the 'phoners' develop in the book.
Basically, it's a different Cell entirely, with the same basic premise.
