As much as I like the 90s series, I think it had the weakest version of Jean Grey. Whenever she was placed in a non-Dark Phoenix action scene she'd faint like 5 minutes after using her powers. And I've noticed lots of jokes about her having "orgasms" in the middle of fights. What the writers were thinking we'll never know.
X-Men: Evolution, while it may have featured teen versions of our favorites, at least Jean was able to use her powers without those pesky fainting spells. She was also more extroverted & proactive.
Wolverine & the X-Men, well, Jean was more of a plot device than a character, and seeing as how it's been discontinued we'll never know if she could have been more than that within this series.
So overall, I'd have to say Evolution featured the best version of Jean in animation. What say you?
I'd go for Evolution as well. She was the only version of Jean who we get to see undergo a full character development. Hell, I'd arguably go so far to say she's the best adaptation of Jean Grey ever.
Behind her, despite her limited appearances, I thought the WATXM Jean was OK. I did like the whole amnesia thing they did with her briefly and she was voiced by Jennifer Hale as well, who is one of my favourite voice actresses. It's just a shame she wasn't actually given more focus beyond being a way to introduce the Phoenix into the series. And now that season 2 is cancelled, it's even more of a shame, because we have no idea if the writers would have improved her character (same goes for the whole series really).
The 90's Jean; I can't really think of anything truly memorable about her and I didn't really feel she was of much use whenever anything was happening and she seemed very weak and ineffectual (which, despite any faults, you can NOT say about the other two).
The only time Jean was really powerful/dynamic in the 90s series was when she was going through her Dark Phoenix phase. Other than that she seemed to be there as just eye candy to hang off of Cyclops's arm. Why they want that route I will never know.

I didn't really like the amnesia thing. It just made it all the harder to feel sympathy for her or feel like I knew her on any kind of semi-personal level. Which is too bad considering that Jennifer Hale is one of the best voice actresses in the business (she was also the voice of Felicia Hardy/Black Cat in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon; I think that was one of her first big VA gigs). With more material, Hale could have been the definitive Jean Grey vocally, but I guess that chance is gone now.
So ultimately Evolution Jean wins. As it was meant to be, given the superior character development she had in that series. Even her relationship with Cyclops seemed best handled in Evolution. In the 90s series Jean was basically Cycke's "damsel" (though a few episodes did a decent job of depicting a genuine bond between them), in W&TXM the impression one gets is that Jean doesn't really care about Cycke & just sort of tolerates him because she's used to him to being in the same general area (and having an unhealthy codependency going on but that's a whole other can of worms tying into another can of worms).
Yea I watched X-men evolution when I was a kid, and that's how I grew up knowing Jean Grey. In fact, she's always been my favorite X-men because of how Evolution portrayed her.
I was disapointed when her powers weren't as developed in the movies as they were in Evolution. I watched the 90s X-men show after Evolution, and it really seemed inferior in my opinion. WATXM Jean had potential, but I was really sad when she wasn't in even half the series.
And I just today came on here to see there won't be a second season Hopefully that changes.

Well, to each his own. I mainly liked the idea about having amnesia because it provided a suitable justification for what was happening in the story and it was kind of interesting to see her rediscover she's a mutant. Although yeah, her lack of screen-time or character development did hurt her portrayal. And I do agree about Jennifer Hale as well.

Oh yeah, without doubt.

Well, I wouldn't quite say that. It is made pretty clear she does love him in my mind (i.e. I doubt she would have attacked Emma so aggressively, if she hadn't kissed Cyclops). It's just, Cyclops seems a bit too... overprotective and single-minded about her (and the beginning of the series and the flashbacks in the later episodes, seemed to imply she'd gotten a little tired of that). Which is fine with me, as it's one thing about the show that does actually resemble genuine relationship problems that every couple goes through at some point.

It also provided another opportunity to make Cyclops look like a chump ;). Honestly, I just think that if they didn't want her to be back in the game so soon they could have found some other less soap operatic way to go about it.
As long as we can agree about Jennifer Hale.

Still, I wasn't really convinced that she loved or cared about him (I'm not sure saving him from being crushed by a bus or yelling "It'll - the Phoenix - kill you!" really counts, or even pinning Emma to the wall, though that may just be because that doesn't have the same level of violence to it as Cyclops blasting Wolverine in the back - twice). The writers seemed to enjoy going out of their way to make Cyclops look like an ineffectual jerk, but then again, there were a lot of things wrong with Cyclops in this series, seeing as how the writers mentality fell into the "Cyclops is ALWAYS inferior to Wolverine" category, which I guess just ties back into the list of things the series could have done better as a whole. Put it to you this way, going just by what was shown in this series, if Cyclops had died or disappeared under circumstances suggesting he had died (and died quite horribly), would Jean have been anywhere near the level of heartbroken that Cyclops was? I'm not so sure she would have been.
I know, I'm making my own thread go off topic. Shame on me. ;)
DarthBill, i completely agree with you. I sort of am glad that WATXM got cancelled mostly due to all the attention on Wolverine. Both Evolution and TAS showed a consensual loving relationship between Cyclops and Jean. Especially in Evolution, that episode where Mystique gets revenge on Cyclops and takes away his glasses and Jean is the only one who knows he is in trouble and goes after Mystique herself. That really showed us how they love each other. And TAS put them off as a married couple already without actually being married. This series purposely deteriorates Cyclops for Wolverine and that whole flashback episode with Cyclops and leading up to the explosion only showed us how much the writers despise Cyclops and how much Wolverine is better than him. When he didnt fight him back and Jean was like "You want to know why he isnt fighting you? Because I told him to" implies that not only does Jean look down on him but also she feels like Wolverine can take on Cyclops and really kill him. How are we supposed to respect him after that? How are we, the audience, supposed to feel about the Scott-Jean dynamic after that whole ordeal? And Jean having flirty eyes with Wolverine also shows us how the writers are trying to set those two up. That should not have happened, Wolverine should have tried to pursue Jean into a relationship but she should have shrugged him off and said she belongs to Scott like they did in TAS. Instead, Wolverine looking and flirting with Jean, her not turning him down and Cyclops being a jealous mother *beep* only shows us how the writers would have put tried to force those two on us in Season 2. Sorry, but if that would have happened it would completely demoralize the show and ruin it. And I agree, this Jean wasnt completely as useless and TAS' one but still, she is nothing compared to the Evolution Jean.

And this was really one of the big problems with this series, and X3 (Which is basically what this series was based on), for that matter, and which is also why I'm absolutely terrified that when they bring Jean back in the books, (and eventually, they WILL) they'll pair her up with Wolverine because Cyclops is with Frost (Who REALLY needs to go back to being a villian).

And I am in complete agreement with you Joshy, EMT. W&TXM needed to flesh Jean out more to get us to really care about her, her fate and whether or not she stays with Cyclops. They could have done other flashbacks showing Jean from the perspectives of other characters but alas they did not. They settled for making Jean a plot device & expected us to care about her as much as Cyclops does (although his caring for her came across as being sadly misguided) for no better reason than she was a main character in the comics for 40-some years.
And I find the idea of Jean & Wolverine as a couple most appalling. Sadly, that's probably what will happen when she eventually returns. I guess then Wolverine will finally have his chance to put up or shut up about whether or not he's really better for Jean than Cyclops.
I agree she was terrible in the 90's version. She is a powerful character and yet she was always presented as the damsel in distress. I'm not very fond of Evolution but even so I did watch the entire series when it was airing and I will always commend them for making Jean a very lovable character. She was strong, independent and anything but the pansy.
However they had the worst version of Storm and the 90's version had the best. Each series has their faults with each character IMHO. The 90's version had the best Wolverine, WATXM has the worst (and most annoying). The 90's version had the worst Scott and Evolution had the best. I really hope to see a fair amount of greatness in each character for whatever series they plan on making next. It's hard to love one character and despise the other and not because they're the villain but because they're development is shoddy.

Really? Worse than W&TXM's emo-Scott? Well, to each their own.
You know the sad thing is, this might be the last time Jean Grey appears in an animated series in any sort of capacity. Whatever the next X-Men series, they may just skip her altogether. :(
Jean - Best in Evolution, worst in TAS Scott - Best in TAS, worst in WATX Wolverine - Best in TAS, worst in Evolution Rogue - Best in TAS, close second in Evolution, worst in WATX Storm - Tie between TAS and Evolution, worst in WATX Beast - Best in TAS, worst in WATX Gambit - Best in TAS, worst in WATX Mystique - Best in Evolution, worst in TAS Sabertooth - Best in TAS, worst in Evolution Magneto - Best in Evolution, worst in WATX Xavier - Hmmm... equal in all three actually
Other characters: Emma Frost - Wayyyyy better in WATX than in TAS Sebastian Shaw - ditto Iceman - Better in Evolution than in TAS Kitty - Better in Evolution than in TAS Mastermold - Better in WATX than in TAS Mr. Sinister - Better in TAS than in WATX Angel/Archangel - Better in WATX than in TAS Senator Kelly - Better in WATX than in TAS Nightcrawler - Better in Evolution than in WATX Scarlet Witch - Better in WATX than in Evolution Quicksilver - Better in WATX than in Evolution
Evolution was the only animated show to do Jean justice. Evolution was the only one who tried to make her into a respectable character. I actually don't know whether I consider TAS or WATXM to be worse. In WATXM she barely did anything but in TAS she was around for the entire show and still barely did anything outside the Phoenix Saga.
TAS Jean went through a LOT of stages. Remember it ran for a long time. I mean for the most part, they really loved to use her in this "damsel" role. It was annoying, especially since she screamed more than Jubilee, who was over 10 years younger. I liked when she lead the team, there were times when she had to lead. She put Gambit and Wolverine in their places with a few words. Her dates with Cyclopes were nice, because we saw Jean's opinions highlighted. But during team missions, she was portrayed as the damsel. So just because of that: TAS NOT the best.
Evolution developed Jean. From Soccer playing MVP who was oblivious to teen peer pressure to strong (yet emotive) leader. Evolution was probably the best animated jean.
WATXM's Jean...was a waste of space. Not to mention the few times were saw her during the flash backs she sounded super angry and annoying??? Or was that just me?
I don't shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you, I throw up, Aghhh!
