Would a series with the original X-men work?

I've been reading the X-men First Class series lately and I was quite stunned by the way the original team of X-men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Iceman) were fleshed out in a more modern setting. It was really refreshing to read about the team at a time when they were more like students than superheroes and before the likes of Wolverine came along to steal the show.

Now I know that Marvel will most likely never produce an X-men show without Wolverine but theoretically speaking, would an X-men series without him focusing on the original team of X-men work?

As long as it was handled as well as the First Class series, then yes, I think it could have a strong shot at working. And I would love to see something done in either animation or film focusing on the original 5, even though I doubt it would ever happen in my life time.

X-Men: First Class is supposedly is preproduction. There have been casting rumors going around.

But judging by the sounds of what I've heard about this 'First Class' film - set in the 60s, no Cyclops, no Jean, etc. - it sounds like it's not really so much about the first class (certainly not the original 5) but more about the rise and fall of the friendship between Magneto & Xavier, and hey, I'm more than happy to spend two hours watching how they became 'frenemies' but if that's the true route they're going to they might as well give it a different title.

I think it would definitely work. I'd personally love to see a series with the original 5 that's done in the tone of First Class or whatever other approach works. Maybe after two or three seasons, they can even have an event or movie that works the All New, All Different team into the mix. While Wolverine is incredibly popular and can attract some viewers, I don't think he has to be a necessary addition to get a series like this on the air as long as it's done well. It would still be a show full of likable characters with cool powers and everything else.

I don't what it will be but I can't imagine that Marvel Animation will have nothing that coincides with the two upcoming X-Men movies, whether it's just dvd releases or something new, so who knows ? Maybe we'll see a First class series.
