Premiere today!
If anyone goes I hope they'll come back here and comment, especially on Elijah's character. This film looks really intriguing from the trailer.

shareI thought this review was great - says DZ was one of 6 top picks at Tribeca because the film was carried by acting of Elijah and Chris - good eh? Slight spoiler - but not really.
TODAY’S 6 TRIBECA FILM TOP PICKS
BY ELIZABETH WEITZMAN

Forty-one countries are represented at the Tribeca Film Festival, but at heart, TFF will always be a hometown affair. And if there are 8 million stories in our city, you’ll find at least a few of the more memorable ones on screen today.
Another movie carried by its actors is “Day Zero” (7:30 p.m., AMC 34th St.), which imagines a Manhattan upended by a mandatory draft. The film follows three friends — played by Chris Klein, Jon Bernthal and Elijah Wood — who have drastically diverse reactions when called to duty. Neither the script nor the direction provides much structure, which should be disastrous but instead results in a couple of weirdly riveting performances. Klein is always best when he twists his pretty face into an odd intensity, as he does here. And while Bernthal does little new with his obsessive soldier, Wood goes completely off the deep end, in a gonzo turn that rivals that of Haas in its raw focus.
I saw the film sunday night (the premiere), and I was impressed. From the looks of the trailer, i thought it would have an almost documentary-like feel to it ... but it didn't. it was very well realized and strangely timeless, as though this story line could be applied to any situation. sure, it was about war and the draft and what desperate people will do, but when it came down to it, i thought it focused more on the character's rocky emotions and relationships. I disagree with that review, though - I haven't seen Jon Bernthal in anything but this, so I can't compare his acting to any previous work, but I thought his performance was the strongest of the three leading men. His character was charming yet obviously had had a tough life, and Jon brought that to the screen. I would guess Elijah got the most media attention, and most of the memorable lines from the show came from him (not to mention his story was very moving), but his character development was not the strongest. Klein was extremely good as well - he brought as much reality to his character as he could have, even though i don't think his character was well developed on paper. some of the things his character did seemed to push it -- I was left wondering, "would george really do that?" however, all in all, i have to say i was sobbing through a lot of the movie ,,,

I saw it at Tribeca on Friday. It was amazing. Much, much better than I was expecting. I think the three main actors did a great job at making their stories so beleiveable. Personally, I think Klein and Wood did the best job, their characters were so complex. Elijah Wood likes to let himself sink in the background and let the other actors shine but in this case you can't miss his turn as the character of Aaron goes further and further off the deep end. The Q/A with the director and the producer at the end was also very informative.
