First Look nabs film pair

Studio acquires 'Amateurs,' 'Day Zero'
By DAVE MCNARY

First Look Studios has acquired ensemble comedy "The Amateurs" and military drama "Day Zero" and set release dates of Nov. 30 and Jan. 18, respectively.
"The Amateurs," written and directed by Michael Traeger, centers on a small town brought together by the common dream of creating an adult film.

Pic, produced by Aaron Ryder for Raygun Prods., stars Jeff Bridges as a down-and-out divorcee who brainstorms the idea of an amateur porn film. Ted Danson, Lauren Graham, Joe Pantoliano, Jeanne Tripplehorn, William Fichtner, Patrick Fugit, Tim Blake Nelson, Isaiah Washington, Glenne Headly, Judy Greer, Steven Weber, Eileen Brennan and Brad Garrett also star.

"Day Zero," a selection in this year's Tribeca Film Festival, explores the emotional struggle of three lifelong friends -- portrayed by Chris Klein, Jon Bernthal and Elijah Wood -- who are drafted into the military, leaving their safe, comfortable lives behind for war.

"Day Zero" is directed by Bryan Gunnar Cole, written by Robert Malkani and produced by Anthony Moody of Indalo Prods.

Hmmm... MAYBE I can go. See, we have this theater in Montclair that has ALL of those limited movies. We got Broken Flowers before, and now we have 2 Days in Paris, In the Valley of Elah, I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With, etc... those type of movies. But if it has to by NYC then that is fine.

Just saying, try to find a distributor that can open it wider because if a movie like this plays in one theater in all of NYC, then it would be a mess

A few things about your comments re: our distributor, etc.

First, it makes it seem like the distributor question is an open one, i.e. that we are still looking for one. We are not. As per the press release and coverage in Variety, the film will be released in the U.S. on January 18, 2008.

Second, I'm not sure why you would assume that "it would be a mess" to open at 1 theater in NYC. It's extremely common (happens all the time in fact). Some movies 'work' from there (i.e. are successful enough to grow to include more screens and/or cities) and some don't.

But whether or not they 'work' is not at all impacted by whether it opens on 1, 5, or 10 screens. And distributors know that. Further, opening on 1, 5, and 10 screens does not scale at all. It costs about 5x as much for 5 screens, 10x as much for 10 - mostly because they would be in 5 or 10 different markets. Not enough markets for national marketing. So you have to duplicate your ad spend in every market (or at least spend money in every market).

Since 5 or 10 screens is not 5x or 10x as likely as 1 screen to make a film 'work', it's simply not as common as releasing on 1 screen. Look - if we get a good NYT review, and good word of mouth, the film will work. If not...well, it wouldn't matter if we were on 5 or 10 screens, and that money would have been spent.

For a marketing campaign for a film to scale well, on a national level, you're talking about millions of dollars, and a commensurate commitment to, say, 50 or 100 screens. That's simply not an option that was presented to us (and frankly is not an option presented to 99.99999% of all films made).

Just wanted to clarify.

We're extremely excited, and optimistic as always!

Thanks,
TM

Oh, now I get it. Thanks

is it only going to be in nyc then?

reply

To start, yes, at the Angelika specifically. It'll grow from there (or not) depending on the box office results, NYT review, etc.

I just watched the trailer, the film looks really great!
I hope it will be so successful that it will be released in France, where I live!
Fingers crossed and good luck to you guys!

Many thanks for your support - and fingers crossed that after you and your friend have braved your various treks, that it also plays in your home markets.

As a related aside, it will also be opening near Seattle, in Bainbridge Island at the Linwood Theater. It'll be the same date as the NYC release - January 18.

See you in NY!

Best,
The Producer

i hope it does well :)

I don't live in US and may not see it in the theatre, but am getting the DVD anyway. But I'm interested to see how it does in US - if people are capable of recognising good films as opposed to the usual dull Hollywood stuff it should do well.

I hope people can see that there are many good movies beyond Hollywood blockbusters.
