Some view his choice - and suicide in general - as a last ditch effort to seize control in his life. When viewed through that lens, it could be viewed as a brave choice, not a cowardly one...

Another theory is he killed himself because if he had gone to war he would have got his friends killed through his stupidity ie the prostitute scenes, so better to kill only himself in that respect, makes sense to me.
