Jerky Slowmotion Footage

I guess the unsharp and jerky slow motions where post-production choice and makes this film look like "my first edit", not that it would change this utter boring attempt at art film. (and yes, i did watch the whole thing to my regret)

Although this might be slightly entertaining for snails i myself would rather watch a mime marathon while seated on a cactus.

It would have been a great movie if the editor and director didn't make those extensions of jerky movements which bored the hell outta me. By the time it got to Rachel Weiz's loooooooooooooooong speech, i was about to fall asleep. but then natalie came in and i woke up.

It's actually a step-printing technique that has become a trademark of Wong's that he's used in MANY of his movies...

reply

The first time the director used this effect I thought the DVD was defective. It was unnecessary and annoying.

reply

Yeah, it's used in some other HK movies too. I thought it was interesting in some of his HK films, though overused at times (Ashes of Time for example).

I did enjoy the film (something a bit different) but a few things did feel out of place, the Jaguar XK (it should have been an older model, her father can't have had it for long at all, so how much could it mean to him or her?) and the jerky editing to name but two. It did feel a little slow at times, too, more languid then dreamy.

I think the film is flawed to WKW standarts, but way better than 80% of the products Hollywood is churning out again and again.

About the slowmo footage, I found it annoying in "Ashes of time", but okay here and in his other quieter movies. Ultimately, this is not a film for everyone, despite being one of the most accesible films of the director's career.

reply

I thought it looked tacky and cheap.

A dull film too by WKW's usual standards..mainly i think, because it lacked any atmosphere or definite mood..

reply

That's totally right...
Asia's got a different rythm, so this kind of "jerky fxs" work out pretty good the movie.

reply

Yeah, he could've cut down on those jerky movements in almost every scene. It just didn't work.

reply

It was stylish.

There are approximately and exactly 21 hours of LOST remaining . . .
