Easily one of my favorite movies ever!

First off let me start by saying that I read Norah Jones who happens to be one of my favorite singers was going to be starring in a movie called "My Blueberry Nights" so I right away played my Paris Hilton card (meaning im watching regardless of what its about)

Over time the movie was made and after it debut at Cannes,I heard a LARGE amount of Haters and some who liked it! It wasnt stopping me I was going to see this movie, but Harvey Weinstine decides tomake this aLIMITED release starting in 5 count them 5 cinemas around the country! Two Week go by and it gets raised to 56 but boy was I lucky because FINALLY a place in Houston got the movie and I HAD to see this...

It lived up to the hype I gave it,I REALLY loved this movie full of GREAT Camera work, the story was beautifully told and Yes even though I was skeptic Norah Jones did a GREAT Job acting which I didnt expect, and to top it ALL off the SOUNDTRACK WAS AMAZING!!! After the credits rolled I was in AWE of the movie I just watched I havent felt this way about a movie since "White Oleander" and is NOW one of my favorite movies I have ever seen! I highly recormend this movie to anyone!!!

your post makes me more excited about this film; I don't really trust western reviewers since they haven't ever really understood WKW's genius - and the HK reviewers who call this film mediocre don't seem to understand WKW's motivations for making this movie.

Yeah I notriced that bevfore I read it,they kept saying stuff like "this isnt his best" and everything in between, but I went into this without never seeing one of the guys movies and I absoultly loved it!!! If you are excited then your excitement will not be let down my friend!

"In the Mood for Love" is, IMHO, a masterpiece - so - yeah - it's hard to equal or top it.

But Wong Kar Wai never "disappoints". He challenges you with his own exploration of time and memory - and this film is no exception.

You must now watch the HK trilogy!

The pacing is a little deliberate, so I'm not surprised a lot of people hate the movie, but if you go with it, you get caught up in its rhythms and are carried away by its beauty. It's a film of great heart, wonderfully atmospheric, with nicely observed/richly detailed characterizations.

It's not quite up to Chungking Express, Fallen Angels or In The Mood For Love, but it's still a major work from a masterful artist.

I truly don't understand why people express so much hatred towards this film. It doesn't have to be leaking with genius to be an enjoyable film.

But if you are a big fan you have high expectations. In my case, those expectations had been lowered a fair bit having read so many reviews that suggested this was far from his best work. But having just seen it I have to say it was better than I was led to believe but I would still rate this among his poorest efforts (down at the bottom with As Tears Go By, his first film). I still enjoyed it and there were some very memorable WKW moments, but it seemed like he's rehashing a lot of what he's already done both thematically and cinematically. To those not familiar with his work it might feel fresh, but to someone like me who's been watching his movies for 15 years, it feels disappointing (as did 2046), especially after the run of films from Chungking Express, Ashes of Time, Fallen Angels, Happy Together and In the Mood for Love all of which I rate as classics.

Perhaps if you go into this as a fan of the director, then you'll be able to latch onto to something of value in this brutally awful film. As someone who isn't a fan, it came across as an amateurish movie full of the kind of trite overly stylized cinematographic effects appropriate to late night softcore porn on Cinemax. The script, ridiculous voice overs and forced dialog alike, was altogether absurd.

Since the director's first movie, I believe that there are two never-overlapping types of viewers: ones who hate his movies and find them extremely boring, and ones that love them.

It's not his first movie with which the viewers are so divided. It's also interesting that very few people would fall in between these two groups (that is, ones that find them acceptable but not bravo). So, either hate or love.

Well, me? I am on the love side. Can't tell you exatly why. Maybe the mood, the actors (the director is good at casting: all actors are very attractive) or everything combined. I remember after I saw "Chunking Express" and told friends around me that it was good and after they saw it, they cursed me for like half a year (they couldn't even finish it, they stopped the movie at around 15 minutes into it). I started to realize that his movies are doomed like that.

I agree some of the dialogs are quite unnatural but that doesn't destroy the mood much. Just my own feelings (yes yes, I know you think it's extremely boring).

i think people think this to be one of the least of wkw's works because of the completely amateur acting by norah jones. she is supposed to be the audience's personification onscreen but she is not able to show any depth so her growth at the end does not register. her acting is wooden and one note and monotone. it's a shame since every other actor in the movie does a phenomenal job - and they're just supporting players here.

it's great that you've been introduced to wong kar wai but my favorite movies of his are in this order: Fallen Angels, Ashes of Time, Happy Together, Days of Being Wild, and the rest:In the Mood for Love/2046/As Tears Go By/My Blueberry Nights. He was at his best with Chris Doyle when theme and camerawork and story were equally great and especially the work had a feverish energy to it. Starting with In the Mood for Love, it became restrained and introverted which makes his movies more muted and moody but also less of a joy to watch since it shows less joy in life. Before his movies were so alive so you could realy feel for the characters in it because their situations and the themes were so nihilistic. I also think the loss of Leslie Cheung to suicide took away a great muse of WKW who had been the heart and soul of all but Fallen Angels from my favorites.
