Beware the Bootleg

Here's something funny.. I work in a store where a chinese man comes in at least twice a week and says DVD DVD DVD... has a bunch of bootlegs... Sells em for $5 a pop... Usually no complaints, really good copies...

This time I bought a copy of Doogal, expecting this humorous movie with an interesting, yet highly known cast...

Going through the movie I keep trying to figure out which actors or portraying what characters... Half way through the movie I close my eyes to listen to the voices and I can't pin point ANY of them. I know William H Macy, and I know Jon stewart, and especailly Whoopie Goldberg, how can you miss her voice? I even convinced myself momentarily that I was hearing them, or tried to tell myself they were just doing a really good job of covering themselves up because of the really well done english accent that was being used throughout the film.

Not once did I really think to myself, that the movie had 2 copies, a UK version and a US one... that the US version had these actors redub the film with american voices.. As I watched the credits roll at the end, I noticed not one actor,(except for Ian Mckellen) was the same as I had been thinking. Suddenly it dawns upon me, why would all these american actors be putting on accents for a cartoon?

I turn the DVD off and start it again, remembering that I had seen something funny in the beginning credits, where it showed who was starring in it. I realized the whole movie was uber clear and that confused me because bootlegs are known for their cut screen and lousy picture...As I watched the credits a quick change of screen with clouds in the background came on showing the American cast, with a little delay in between it quickly switched back without a glitch in the background sound, to the UK version repeating cast member Ian Mckellan's name. This had confused me but I had let it go, it didn't phase me until I actually thought about it.

It kinda freaked me out a little bit. Now i'm really anxious to see the US version to see and hear the differences in words, and script. I actually had heard them say a few things in the movie that I thought was interesting humor.. I wonder if they are in the US version as well.

Well, it's 12:45AM and I'm now way too analytical.. so goodnight!

Hopefully you pay for the US version in the right way when you do see it, and any other movie for that matter. I know this is not the point of your post, and I'm honestly not trying to be a b****, but piracy is really a messed up thing. As movie lovers, we should be willing to support the people who are making the films, not people who are stealing them.

The guy selling those dvd's is right up there w/ people who steal other people's stuff, like watches and car radios, and then sells it. It makes me sick because I know how much sacrifice goes into making these films, and here that guy comes along and figures he'll profit from it when he's done absolutely nothing to create it himself. It's hurting the industry, and worse, it hurts the creative people who actually make the movies and get compensated often in backend rather than upfront. Even if Doogal is not a good movie, the people who actually did the work on it are the ones who deserve to be paid for it.
