Strictly for 12 year olds and younger...

I think the thread title says it all. It bothers me though that a movie feels like it must take the mickey out of other movies in order to be popular or entertaining (Ice Age 2, LOTR, etc). I wonder if the original Brittish version of this film did the same.

As for getting A-list American voice actors... bloody hell. I could understand if the film was in French or German or Gaelic, but for crying out loud, it's in English already! I think it's rather pathetic that it needs American voice actors in order to be understood, not to mention popular. I shudder to think how bad the American education system is that people can't understand what another person is saying in the same language just because of a slightly different accent. And if they think that a Brittish accent is to hoighty-toighty for them and they feel like they are being spoken down to as a result, well, maybe that would do them a bit of good.

What's your problem?

Dude, most Americans have no problem with British accents. We LIKE them. The decision to dub American voices over the British ones were made by the idiots in the Hollywood studios, who always cater to the lowest-common-denominators.

And it's best to spell-check before accusing an entire group of people of being too hoighty-toighty for "Brittish" accents. I'm just sayin'.

When did this lord of the rings issue ever come up in this conversation?

Okay, excuse me I'm way over 12 and I still love movies like these, they're actually somtimes really funny, and geeze what is your problem?! Finding Nemo was a movie like this and hello, its on the top 250 list! So hah! These animation comedies are sweet, What really is your problem??!

I bid you all FaREWeLL...

reply

This thread fails. But uhh... yeah that's Hollywood for ya.

Think before you type too.

reply

I'm going to see it and I am far from 12.

reply

I want to see it too, and I'm 15, Plus, it Has William H. Macy, and I Loooove W.H.M.'s acting. Not to mention Jon Stewart, he rules, and all the other voices.

The reason why I want to see it: It looks very original and unlike Hoodwinked, it doesn't look like a story that has been told a million times that involves an action packed tale to make it better than it already never was.

Tell me If that didn't make sense.

Do necrophiliacs love zombies?

reply

Aside from the fact that they wanted name actors doing the voices, they also re-wrote a lot of the dialogue so re-recording was in fact necessary.

Americans do not have a problem with British accents, they are very nice to listen to, but it is hard to understand them at times. I love watching the British version of The Office and other shows they show on PBS from time to time but the truth is sometimes I just cannot quite make out what they are saying and have to put the captions on. The movie is, after all, for younger kids who are still perfecting their use and understanding of American English and the task of understanding a British accent can be a bit daunting.

Come on I gave up on children's tv when I was 10 don't you mean 9 and under! When I was 12 I started High School(12 is the starting age to High School in the UK) I hated children's tv and so did everyone I knew.

What the *beep* does the American education system have to do with this movie? Quit trying to take shots at our country, just because you cleary don't like the U.S. And for the record, us Americans can perfectly understand what you Brits say, so calm the hell down.

Has the complaining gentleman considered that with the script adapted and partially updated for American audiences (and very hilariously, I might add; the "Pirates of the Caribbean" reference and subsequent Disney crack was priceless) that the British voice cast might not have been available to go in and redub some large amount of their lines? (And Ian McKellan, Kylie Minogue and Dame Judi D. ARE in the U.S. cast.)

The original Brit actors probably did their voice-work two years ago, and getting them each rescheduled to get into the a studio with the movie's voice director, audio/animation crew, etc. is much more a logistical nightmare than doing it from scratch -- like retrofitting an old building with modern fire exits, handicapped access, telecommunications wiring etc., is often harder than just building a new building.

As for the script adaptation, there's nothing wrong and quite a bit right about being sensitive to cultural relevance. McDonald's, for example. doesn't serve beef hamburgers in Hindu parts of India. Even the first Harry Potter book was partly renamed in the U.S. since the cultural/mythic impact of a philosopher's stone has no relevance here -- just as the cultural/mythic impact of the Alamo, say, might not resonate the same way in London or Leeds.

Finally, there's the creative aspect. Many the Americans involved wanted to take the material and see what highly inventine people like Jon Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg could bring.

The original version still exists. It always will. Just like the original and the Americanized "Godzilla" movies -- BOTH of which are pretty damn good allusional-monster pics!

It's a give-take relationship. If you allow yourself to be entertained, this movie will entertain you. I'm 19, and I had no idea whatsoever what to expect, and I was rewarded with a trippy CGI kids movie that ranged from bizarre to ridiculous. I loved it.

reply

LOL..

I'm thirteen, and from the little I've seen of this movie, it looks like a load of sh*t, so I'm not even gonna watch it. I don't even think 9 year olds would watch this. :P I know I wouldn't.
