WELCOME TO THE BOTTOM 100 DOOGAL!
Congratulations Doogal on finally making the bottom 100!
I find it funny it's on the bottom 100. I loved it and thought it was a better movie for kids than most movies these days.
Actually critics are plain stupid. I guess you'd rather watch trash such as Napoleon Dynamite and Brokeback Mountain then.
"Actually critics are plain stupid."
It is their job to watch films and determine which are good and which are bad. Would you say that you are in a better position to critique movies?
I mean, you like Doogal.
I must say solarspore's post is the most hilarious thing I've ever read lol.
wow man, I mean how do you manage to mess up a sentence THAT bad?
You said: "It is their job to watch films and determine which are good and which are bad."
The problem is, most movie critics aren't watching movies for the same reason that the consumer is. If there was a standard for what the critic was actually critiquing for, then maybe this would be a more appropriate statement.
Historically, most movies which were well reviewed by critics did poorly in theaters or were seen as disappointments based on the hype that accompanied them. Whereas most children's movies (you know, the ones whch are specifically targeted to children?) have gotten extremely poor reviews because they were children's movies and have been a well spent $7.
Toy Story got good reviews. The Incredibles got good reviews. So did many of the earlier Disney animated features. So did Shrek and its sequel. Many well-made children's movies receive good reviews from the critics. A.O. Scott from The New York Times darn near crapped his pants over the Spongebob Squarepants movie. Just because a movie is specifically targeted to children doesn't mean that the critics can't enjoy it too. Your theory does make some sense, but only if you ignore a lot of empirical evidence to the contrary.
Movie critics become critics because they enjoy movies. They like to be entertained by movies. Isn't that also what the consumer wants? To be entertained?
Most movies that were well-reviewed by critics did poorly in theaters? I don't know about that. What about ET? Or Star Wars? Or The Lord of The Rings films? Or the aforementioned children's movies? I don't think it's fair to say that critics' and audiences' tastes are rarely similar. Who do you think critics write for? Other critics? Christ, without the demand from the public (the consumers) for informed opinions from professional movie critics, you wouldn't have a NYT Movies section, you wouldn't have an Ebert and Roeper, and you probably wouldn't have any critics at all. Newspapers could just print a list of plot summaries instead. It would save them a hell of a lot of money on payroll. Clearly somebody is paying attention to the movie reviewers.
I think you are mistaken.

I guess it just depends on which critic's reviews you are reading. If you read the "Life" section of USA Today, for example, you'll find plenty of laudatory praise for movies like "Talladega Nights" or whatever popular movie is playing at the moment. If you are reading reviews from a more sophistocated source, like Film Quarterly, you'll find more positive reviews for arthouse films and foreign releases that typically do not appeal to your average American. Does that mean that the writers from USA Today are somehow inferior as "critics" when compared to the writers from Film Quarterly? Of course not. It just means that they enjoy different kinds of movies.
Stop talking about movie critics as if they are some secret society of stormy intellectuals, far removed from the needs and interests of "the common man," who live in some mythical ivory tower and treat every movie like it's supposed to be artful and profound in some way. I would like to point out what I wrote above: A.O. Scott of The New York Times, a fairly reputable source, gave the movie Spongebob Squarepants a positive review. Not only was it a positive review, he freakin' loved it. Spongebob Squarepants is no exercise in the art of film. It's a remarkably entertaining movie to be sure, but it's no crowning achievement of American cinema. Yet a critic gave it a positive review.
If you enjoy a film, chances are good there is some movie critic out there somewhere who also enjoyed it. Whether your taste is 8 1/2 or more 8 Below, there is a critic who writes for you. When somebody says that the critics really enjoyed a film, they usually mean that the majority of critics enjoyed it. Critics do not make their decisions as a collective body with a particular purpose in mind. They're just a bunch of people who enjoy watching movies.

You don't read a lot of critic's reviews, yet you say you disagree with the majority of critics? That doesn't make any sense.
You must know a lot of people with bad taste in movies.
You're welcome, by the way.

People like me? Oh lord. I shudder to think of the strange place "people like me" must occupy in your mind....
And it isn't obvious that you meant "the majority of critics that I've read" when you said "the majority of critics" retard. The majority of critics means the majority of critics. That's like saying "the majority of watchmakers are smart" because you know one or two smart watchmakers, and then getting all prickly when somebody corrects you. Christ.
I can't say anything about it because I haven't seen it yet. It's on my parents' Blockbuster Online queue.

OH HO HO! Bring on the weird presumptions about my home life! You are really breaking out the big guns now! Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that I live in my mother's basement and that I’m a virgin! HO HO! That will show me!
How predictable.
I’m not trapping innocent people into having conversations with me. No one here is holding you at gunpoint, forcing you to respond to every one of my criticisms and insults. If you don’t like it when I point out how retarded you are, go stink up some other message board for another crappy movie you no doubt enjoyed because your taste in film is roughly similar to that of your two small children.

Aww, poor baby deleted all of her crappy arguments! Now what will people have to read for entertainment?
