I know it's just a movie. In real life people can't get a job without ID and social security, right?
The movie showed Chris burning his ID, but this never in fact happened. He worked several jobs, under his real name and using his SS number. His wallet, found in his backpack in the bus after his death, contained several hundred dollars in cash and many ID cards, including Social Security.
However, it was possible then (and now) for workers to get jobs in the "underground economy" where they are paid in cash and are not on any employment roster. Agriculture, construction and a number of other areas where minimally skilled labor is involved, hire people with no documents. IIRC, Chris had at least one job like that, working for a rancher but he quit when he realized he would not be paid.
