Yes, these were all real people, although their real names were not used in every case. Ron Franz's real name was Russell Fritz; Jon Krakauer agreed to conceal his identity while he was alive; after his death, it was no longer a secret, but the original pseudonym was preserved in the film as well as in the book.
Jan and Tracy had their real names (but the "romance" with Tracy was entirely fictitious, and the real Tracy was quite annoyed by this distorion of what took place - there was never any "seduction scene" in real life). Jan's boyfriend was not named Rainey, it was (is) Bob; Jan has referred to him in several interviews, but I don't recall that his surname has ever been made public. share
