If the renovation took place just a few years prior to
filming, why is Grey Gardens in that state? I assume
it was at least a decent renovation even though I'm not
too sure Jackie and Ari would have been overly generous.
Still you'd think the place would look fairly decent even
if they hadn't kept it up.

i agree. also it is an old house, plumbing, heating, wiring break down over the years and it's expensive to repair and replace those systems. most old houses would be the way gg was unless major money was poured in all the time to maintain a place like that.
The place could have been kept up but neither one of them even tried. It was cleaned up which should have given them the chance to keep it that way. When you look over a your cat going to the bathroom on the floor and say, "Well, at least someone is doing what they want" and then laugh, you aren't trying too hard..........

It had nothing to do with trying, I think they would be classified has having the mental disease of hording today as well as a few other mental issues. No one wants to live that way, but their mind is not wired correctly so it seems their surroundings taken on it's own entity. You should watch the shows about hording today and it sums up what I'm trying to say. That's the sad thing about mental disorders, it does not make sense to those without any.

if you've seen shows about hoarding as i have, you would know people pile up stacks of everything under the sun, who knows what they have since they don't. there are piles of junk in every room, some rooms can't even be entered as they're so full.
i haven't seen any evidence of hoarding at gg.

This is true. Hoarders can't let go of their "stuff". The Beales were not attached to their garbage.I believe if they still had money for garbage removal and repairs Grey Gardens would have been kept like it was when they had the money to do so.

umm, OCD is the fourth-most common mental disorder. so is it is a mental illness.
the OP is right. they have the same mentality where they dont clean. in the documentary they had piles of newspapers, garbage, and feces. they didnt take care of the yard, where everything was overgrown. and animals everywhere. in reality they were more disgusting and dirty and more animals then in this movie.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is classified as a Psychiatric Disorder in the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders", Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). Both Edies suffered from mental illness.
I don't think that they hoarded animals, it probable that because their cats weren't neutered or spayed they bred at will. It's shocking how fast cats can reproduce if you let them. Did you know that 2 cats can produce 80 million offspring within 10 years?
