I just watched this and not for one minute

do I believe Jackie O would have walked around in that house for a minute like in the film. I read a biography about Joseph & Rose Kennedy's children and their spouses and Ethel had a lot to say about how snobby Jackie was back then. No freakin way! I do believe she would have provided a the means for the house to be cleaned up simply to avoid the Bouvier family name being in the press in that embarrassing situation. Onasis wouldn't have given a damn about how it looked in the press While she would have.

I also don't think it was her responsibility to make sure the aunt & cousin was looked after as long as there were immediate family living that were also responsible people. That would be the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Phelan Beale & Edith Bouvier Beale.

mojo,
i agree with most of what you said, jackie wouldn't have set foot in that house for anything.

i don't agree with her sons being responsible, they did what they could and they paid the taxes on gg. they had young children and she was a horrible mother to them. they were neglected and ignored by big edie, they left home as soon as they could to get away from her. she was only interested in herself and never acted like a mother.

Onassis may very well have felt that it was a shame to allow relatives to live in squalor like that, when it was so easy to help them. The money it cost to fix up that house would have been a thousandth of Ari's pocket change anyway. What's a few grand when you have hundreds of millions?

If I were one of the wealthiest men in the world, and my wife had an aunt and a cousin living in a dump, I would probably help the ladies out, and not care at all about the press.

On the other hand, we don't know Ari Onassis's mind.

jcb,
mr onassis had no obligation to help out the edies, he was very generous to finance the work at gg. just because he had tons of money doesn't mean he had to spend it on the ladies.

jackie had plenty of money too but she didn't spend hers, she just wanted her name cleared.

mr onassis deserves a lot of credit for financing the work when jackie wouldn't help her own family.

I suppose by that logic no one really has any obligation to help anyone.

Why would anyone want to live like that, anyway? They obviously could have had the money to live quite comfortably, the mother at least. I bet the land the house stood on alone would have been worth a fortune, even back then. If that was a relative of mine then I think I'd be hard-pressed to find any sympathy for them.

Not knowing Jackie or Ari and only speculating, it really seemed to me Jackie was just doing damage control by offering to clean up the house. She only showed up, when her name got dragged through the tabloids. And I don't know how it turned out in real life, but as far as the film goes, it still didn't look like much after the clean up.

Jackie & Ari may not have been responsible for the Edies, but I still think out of human compassion for ones' family, they would've helped more! It seemed like Jackie hadn't talked to the Edies in years, or she'd have known what was going on. And her & Ari had more money than they ever knew what to do with - it would've have been a financial burden at all to help the ladies out. If I had that kind of money or married a man that did, I wouldn't think twice about helping out my relatives, even if they weren't living in squalor w/ no heat or water!
