is that suppose to be funny? barrymore can't act, and little edie deserved a far better actress to portary her on screen. damn you barrymore.

Not only yours. Many , including myself, can agree she was brilliant!

reply

[deleted]

I completely forget I was watching her - I was watching Eddie

Brilliant acting from both women

[deleted]

I agree but it's Edie not Eddie. Seems like quite a few people make that mistake

I thought the original real Little Edie in the documentaries was much more interesting than the Barrymore Edie...as in MUCH.

reply

let me tell you something ''benji-the dog''. watching the documentaries should have left you with two very obvious thoughts; first: that in no way was barrymore believable in the role of little edie. and second: that this garbage of a script, that managed to find it's way to hbo, was completely unoriginal and even could be debatably considered twisted plagiarism, for having quoted the original documentay of 'grey gardens' to death; should have been burned during mid-reading and never mentioned again!

i hiss when i see or hear any newspaper, television news, or radio program mentions this... this judas of a film.

furthermore, barrymore by no means was believable as little edie! barrymore can't even begin to try and express, let alone, to even understand the lose and mental pain little edie went through, and continued to put herself through; for years and years. the question that i'm left with is: what kind of director even had the brain-fart, to even think that a immature thirty-something year old, could even attempt such a task as channeling 'little edie'?

barrymore, believable? no! not in this life; not ever!

The fact that Little Edie's own relatives said that Drew Barrymore did an awesome job, makes it clear that you are part of the minority. If the two people who know the woman best said Drew did a good job, then she did a good job. It's that simple.

It's apparent that you don't like Drew Barrymore and you don't seem like you can't get past the fact that the girl from "Scream" and "Never Been Kissed" is capable of taking on challenging roles successfully.

reply

Good point! I found Drew Barrymore captivating in this role. Apparently film critics did too which would explain the awards and nominations Ms. Barrymore received for this role. She was terrific!

I think the point in making this film was to build on the original documentary of these women, giving us more of their life story based on what they revealed during their '75 documentary film. How exactly is it plagiarism when it's based on a documentary? The makers of this version never claimed to be making an 'original' film. Their intention was clear from the start, & in the end they gave viewers of the '75 doc "the rest of the story".

As far as Barrymore goes, I'm intrigued by her in general. She has an interesting family history & has lived an eventful life herself. And she's quite an accomplished woman, all told. And, not only is she free-spirited but I think she may have some eccentric tendencies herself, so in that sense she was great for this part. I'll admit I'm not often impressed with her acting, tho. I want to like her as an actor, but I just can't, not fully. She does seem to almost always pull off her roles, but some just barely. This role was one of her better attempts. While I tend to imagine it to be less challenging to portray someone when you not only have footage of them to study & mimic but are 'simply' asked to reenact it verbatim, I don't know how that works really because I'm not an actor - so I give her credit where I believe it's due. Imo, she not only became Edie but made a nice leap in her evolution as an actor.

That said, I do not believe Edie is rolling in her grave, as you say. I do think she would think you're being a bit too hard on Barrymore, tho.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I thought Barrymore was brilliant. I have seen video of little Edie and there are lines that Barrymore says in this movie that mirror the original almost exactly, IMO. It's the reason I have seen this film about ten times.

reply

I just watched the original documentary and yes, Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore did a fantastic job.

On another thread, someone who knew Little Edie said she channeled her perfectly. I do think Drew did a terrific job.

reply

I think she did an excellent job! The only person I can imagine doing the older Little Edie better would be Stockard Channing. But I don't think she could've ever played the younger Little Edie so Drew Barrymore was the best choice.

Indeed Damn you, Barrymore! You made me cry all 3 times that I've watched this movie. Drew Barrymore, a name I'm going to mention when I'm talking a bout great actresses. She was only 33 when filming this, and she played one character from the age range of 18-58. I've seen the documentary, it's scary how close Drew got it. It's...well, almost the exact same.
