Handling of Luke Cafferty

Why did Luke Cafferty always take the grunt of it? Was he specifically written to be the punching bag of the show? I felt sorry for him.

You know I rewatched seasons 4 and 5 and I have to agree with you. I think the worst part was it was implied that NO school offered him a scholarship. I'm pretty sure on a state winning team the second best player would have at least some D2 and D3 looks.

reply

He DID have a D3 School look at him. He turned them down.

Sadly, not all high school stars pan out. For his position, he was undersized, and despite his heart, he likely wouldn't have thrived in a Division 1 college where all of the players are high caliber and much bigger than the high school talent that Dillon/East Dillon would ever face.

I think it was accurate but I agree, it was sad to see how things ultimately did pan out for him.

When he was talking to Tim he said that he didn't get the "feeling" he used to so he decided that hanging with that sweetie Becky was a wiser path for him than trying to pursue football.

You are right about his size though. Even Tim wouldn't have likely gone any farther than College football himself.

He was clearly apprehensive about going to school before he got with Becky.

I agree with you regarding Tim as well. In college he would have been an undersized fullback and I don't see him being able to make the move over to tight-end either. He was big and strong, but he was an average athlete in pretty much every other aspect, which would have made him a slower halfback.

Tim probably could have made it in Division I if he actually cared, but he obviously knew in his heart that he would never recapture the feelings he had at Dillon, nor did he really ever want to leave.

Tim might be able to get a Safety gig but would have a hard time getting the starting spot because there are so many black players with that job (Don't believe me? Just check the NFL rosters for DBs.) You might have 3 or 4 white starter DBs in the entire league.

I'm not saying that Tim has any real shot the NFL but even the San Antonio college he briefly went to wasn't a Division I team. I live next to UNR (University of Nevada "Reno") and we played the real Texas San Antonio team from time to time on our "out of Conference schedule". We also played North TX and Austin Peay. We weren't nor were they, Division I at the time. We got them for "Homecoming" games etc. As in easy win for homecoming. I don't know if the Texas teams are Div I now but we are!!!!

Smash was also undersized, and it was routinely pointed out how fast Luke was. There is always a place for guys who are fast.

reply

Realistically, what hurt Luke was him having to transfer from Dillon to East Dillon. Dillon had a track record of getting Division I recruiters appearing at their games. He was also a halfback that was forced to play on both sides of the ball... in my opinion, while he helped the Lions with his defense, his offensive prowess suffered, especially after getting the stinger on his hip.

He just caught a series of unfortunate events. BUT, he did get the love of his life in Becky.
