Just started watching and my only complaint is...

Does anybody else seem to have a problem with the grown ass adults having sex with these apparent high school kids? I mean did the writers not even think about it?!?! The creepy business guy from California and a high school waitress? Tim Riggins and the 30 year old neighbor? I am only through season 1 but still this is kinda creepin' me out. Other than that great show and as someone who played high school football in Texas and from a small successful school I will say they get a lot of so dead on and of course some is over dramatized for TV. But I think Kyle Chandler completely aces the job as the coach. Most of the characters are great. But the creepy child predators kinda freak me out...

I definitely have a problem with it, though teenagers having sex with full grown adults is not unusual and not nearly as widely controversial as one would think. So, it's not unrealistic. The retcon of turning Tim, Tyra and Lyla into sophomores in season one makes it look even worse.

Let me just warn you of the mess that is season 2 and how the writers pretended season two never existed in season three and onward due to the writers' strike cutting the season short and the season being poorly received. That's just so you won't come back asking later. The series does recover however, with three very good to great seasons in row.

I guess because I have reached middle age that I was disturbed by the sexual situations referenced in this thread. Although the actors themselves were older than their characters, Julie and her T.A. was horribly revolting. The rodeo star and Tyra? Disgusting. Lastly, Taylor Kitsch and the neighbor? Just wow..... In my neighborhood the men would be high fiving him while the police would be knocking on her door.........

reply

This isn't the 1st show to do this. I remember Beverly Hills 90210did this often.

reply

I have a problem about Julie Taylor being a spoiled nasty bitch. She's the worst character I have ever seen on TV.

reply

Worse than Lyla?

Get on the scale! Get off the scale.

reply

Julie was too often used as a prop for Matt and her parents to have drama in their lives, and rarely did the show give her a fair amount of focus if he didn't involve her doing something dumb. But saying she's the worst TV character ever is extreme, unless one has watched very little TV. I'm not even sure she's the worst main character on this show. It's pretty close between her and Lyla. Lyla did seem to have more of a inner-life during the series and her own complete arc. But Minka's acting greatly limited what the character could have been.

good luck with that

The creepy business guy from California and a high school waitress ?

I don't remember him. Which epi was it ? Thanks !

reply

I think it was either episode 3 or 4 of S1 where Tyra hooks up with a character played by Patrick J. Adams. It was the first episode that expressed Tyra as someone who was more than a fun, casual dater. She ending up liking the guy but he later revealed he already has a girlfriend, and she had to pretend that she knew it was a one time thing.

thanks !!!

Yea this and Tim'so drinking problem. People just over look it. In their defense, when I was in high school I knew plenty of girls with grown-up men and everyone knew and saI'd nothing.

The "creepy business guy" was probably supposed to be a 22 or 23 year old guy.... a junior business man who wasn't married.

It's not out of the question for someone that age to still be attracted to a hot, mature-looking 17 or 18 year old, who looks like she's in her early 20's. That's completely normal, unless she wasn't yet legal age.

reply

She wasn't legal though...

reply

Well if she's really supposed to be 16, then that IS creepy. But she looks a lot older than that.

reply

She was 19 when the show ended which made her MAX 16/17 when she slept with the older guy. Doesn't matter how old she looks-there are tons of 14 year olds looking 24 these days, doesn't make it any more legal smh.

reply

It's the retconning that really makes this extra super creepy. Tyra - who is CLEARLY supposed to be a senior in Season 1 - is suddenly retconned into being a sophomore (!). So even if Business Guy is 22 or 23, Tyra (in retrospect) was only, what, 15? GROSS! Hell even if she was 17 it's kinda creepy. But 15? That's illegal!

You all mentioned Tim and the 30+ neighbor - also creepy. But you forgot Matt and the Sexy Mexican Maid (I think she was Guatemalan)! Also super creepy! What bothers me the most is that it is presented by the showrunners as if it's totally fine, which is kinda disturbing. Because it's definitely NOT FINE!

reply

16 or older is fine.

reply

I agree. I always found this a super creepy aspect of the show! It was very distracting the first two seasons.

**SEASON 4 SPOILER**

Thank god Tim finally learned boundaries in season 4 with Becky. haha.
