The sequel was garbage.

It was not as good as the original ... in fact it kind of dragged the story down. The original movie was a real gem.

Why is it that it's always the over-the-top religious character (many times paralleling real life) that basically ruins everything for everyone else?

Ever watched religious movies? There it's always the "atheist" guy who "loses" in the end.

Except that in a religious movie (or the parallels in real life), an atheist losing in the end would NOT ruin it for the religious characters involved.
