Why I loved the ending....

I have gone back and forth on the ending, with Beth "buying her way" out of the facility. At first I thought it was a cop-out and didn't feel true to the films. It seemed too easy.

Now, I realize it was the perfect ending. Why? Because it shows that these guys are all essentially about money, nothing more. Torture is just a means to an end for them. They don't get a kick out of it personally...in fact, they seem rather blase about the whole process. I'm talking about the folks in charge, not the henchmen- who seem to have a real bloodlust.

The powers-that-be were truly in it for the money and nothing else. Evil? Yes, because they don't care about human life in their quest for cash but they weren't out to kill people at all cost.

Cynical world view from Roth, to be sure, but made me appreciate the ending a lot more and gave insight into the workings of the place.

But they weren't JUST about the money. If they were they wouldn't have insisted that Beth kill Stuart (i.e. she had to do that AND pay them in order to get out of their alive) and they wouldn't have had the dogs eat Todd alive because he didn't finish the job of killing Whitney. They in no way profited off of the deaths of Stuart and Todd, and yet they facilitated both of them. That seems to refute the "They are just about the money" theory.

They killed Todd because he was a risk, he could've exposed them. If he didn't kill Whitney and then went to the cops, he'd be implicated sure, but not for murder. They were tying up a lose end. The same with Beth.
Sure, they are psychopaths who may get some pleasure from it, but they are in it for the money.
Look how they profited from Whitney a second time. Auctioning her off. They were pretty rushed about it. Not wanting to let an opportunity go to waste. They'll make money any way they can.
First and foremost, they are hustlers.
