Julianne Moore has the @#$% Boston accent
I'm watching the episode where the gang go on the road to Boston. Moore's accent makes me cringe like nails on a chalkboard.

shareYou're an idiot: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0496424/faq?ref_=tt_ql_op_2#.2.1.9.
shareBig deal
shareNo, that definitely proves you're an idiot. You have no idea of the kind of technical training that actors go through in order to do accents correctly. And someone working at her level has access to professional voice coaches who know exactly what accents are correct for each neighborhood of Boston. If Julianne Moore is doing a "Boston" accent, she's doing it right, regardless of what anyone from Boston thinks.
Yeah, no, you're a big, fat, frickin' idiot. Shut up.
I completely agree, but not knowing the genuine accent, could she possibly be exaggerating the accent for comedy effect? Same as the Avery flashback to her Maryland accent.

Given the kind of show 30 Rock is, I agree with your suggestion that Julianne Moore was exaggerating the accent rather than attempting authenticity. I lived in Massachusetts for 30-odd years and never heard anyone speak quite that way. She's played as a stereotypical local girl, rough around the edges, sporty, fun (but atypically beautiful).
shareExactly! And her character was there to emphasise how far Jack had come from his roots too.

I was insisting that I wanted to go to Paxton, and they were telling me that I am there. share
I always felt she was exaggerating the accent.
I thought that was a given.
This makes me laugh, anytime someone hears a fake accent even when they are good they will call it bad but came people are so prepared to hate something.
shareFor most of the country, not living in Boston, this is how you sound to us.
shareIt's how anyone from Southie sounds. Moore used an authentic Southie accent.
shareHer character wasn't from Southie.
Look at that loser. Sitting there all alone and sad. He's like me yesterday. I hate him.
Yes, she was. IIRC, she was no longer living in South Boston when she and Jack re-connected, but they both grew up there. Remember, in The Fighting Donaghy's Jack's family all have Southie accents as well.
shareNo, she wasn't. They are from Sandchester (a made up place).

Well, she, Jack and Jack's family (except for Colleen, oddly) all have Southie accents, so fictitious or not, it was intended that they all came from a Southie neighborhood.

shareWell, that's what they sound like. It's one of the most annoying accents on the planet. Every time I'm in Boston, I have to drink so my ears don't bleed.
shareI was going to start a post with the same subject, I agree 100 per cent. I think Moore is a terrific actress, But her voice voice can be really annoying on this show. So , it's one of three things : 1, she's doing the accent wrong, B. she's doing it right, and that's just how people from Boston sound, or 3...I thought there was a third thing , I guess its one of those two. I'm not an expert, but I have ears. from Memories I have of other people or actors with Boston accents it didn't sound like hers.
shareOption B is correct: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0496424/faq?ref_=tt_ql_op_2#.2.1.9.
shareI think Julianne is even more adorable than usual with the Boston accent.
shareI lived in Boston for a year. Moore's accent is EXACTLY what a ton of native Bostonians sound like. Their accents are very much that extreme. I can't stand their accents. One of the most unpleasant sounding accents I've ever heard. Perfect for comedy, though.
shareIve just watched the Lee Marvin/Derek Jeter episode and have to say , the accent is growing on me. Either a) she's toned it down, or b) I'm getting used to it.
Jack is a fool if he chooses Avery over her.
A Boston accent also makes me cringe.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.
