The doctor and his family were necromancers. Basically, they stole corpses from a local cemetary and used them for occult experiments. They also enlisted Jonah, a young medium, to help them with these rituals. However, during one session, it backfired. The spirits of the stolen corpses attacked the doctor & co., killing everyone but Jonah. Jonah tried to escape, but the spirits soon caught up with him and trapped in the incinerator, killing him too.

Basically, the malevolent ghosts are those of the corpses stolen from the cemetary. Thoses spirits were denied eternal sleep (hence the eyelid cutting ritual), which made them extremely bitter and spiteful. They lash out at the living by every possible mean.

I don't think the doctor and the rest of the necromancers haunt the house (at least, they aren't shown doing so). However, the ghost of Jonah still resides there. I think he just tries to warn the visitors, to scare them into moving out for their own good. He isn't malevolent.

Jonah told the priest and Matt the story that the above poster stated, the story of the spirits killing the doctor, the guests and eventually Jonah in the incinerator. The ghosts didn't heal Matt as they were very malevolent. Just before he died, the doctor said to Matt "They'll be after you next. Run" or something worded similar. The doctor was certainly punished for disturbing the dead, they killed him.
