Yes, she was taking a shower BECAUSE she got garbage juice on her. It was a really quick shot, but that's why she was taking a shower - I also think this was one of the things that supposedly actually happened in the real-life account.
As far as people complaining about this horror film, I'll say this:
a)I wasn't expecting Oscar-worthy soliloquys or Shakespearean monologues;
*Cliches - Let's be real - while there are some redundant-ass things done over and over again in films, given the fact that cinema (at least in the US) has been around for 100+ years now, isn't it somewhat logical that some techniques would be re-used? There's an old saying that says, "There's really nothing new under the sun" and this certainly applies to film, no matter HOW things are presented in film/what techniques are used to tell the story;
b)I was expecting to be transported into an experience - in this case, the experience of a family in a hellish (pun intended) predicament and the journey they would undertake to get through, and hopefully resolve that predicament;
c)I liked the special effects, and some of the techniques - am wondering if they did some rotoscoping, or shot some of it in sepiatone;
d)While there were SOME jump scares, there was some buildup;
e)I thought the backstory was interesting and I liked how they weaved it into the story - they didn't just use flashbacks, but they actually combined it into the present-day narrative;
f)Loved the effects where the walls and ceilings would get bloody and rusty - to me, that reminded me of Silent Hill (especially the scene in Silent Hill 3 the game, when Heather walks into that dark room with a mirror and all of sudden, the room changes;
g)Acting - while it was akward at times, and some of the characters' decisions didn't make sense, I thought back to this: what would I do if I was in a predicament like this, where I was in a family of 6, the pursestrings were extremely tight, and some otherworld entity was interfering? Personally, as soon as I heard, "Well, this house has a history", I would have tried to get the hell out of there, but sometimes we don't know what we'd do in a certain situation, until we actually find ourselves in it.
In closing, this film effectively (for the most part) pulled me into an experience that I was able to enjoy for a couple hours - therefore, that was sufficient enough for me. Also, compared to the Michael Bay-produced Amityville Horror remake, this film had only a few jump scares, and it did have some buildup and tension which are good qualities of a good horror film. While Bay is good at action, the only thing I liked in his Amityville was the opening montage - the rest of the film was pretty bad and had jumps every other minute.
