what kind of mother......

You could have pushed me over when she left her two youngest kids and the cousin behind to follow the ambulance. Even if she believed the the "haunting" was over, the Rev. told her there would be "aftershocks". What kind of mother would say "I am going to follow the ambulance, and when I get back, we are leaving."?

Try Jesus. If you don't like Him, the devil will always take you back.

What annoyed me worse than that was that the cousin decided to go and have a shower. That was just the dumbest, most unrealistic part.

most stupid shower ever!

When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...

That annoyed me too, such a cliche horror movie brain damage thing to do.

Au revoir, Shosanna!

I think she was covered in garbage juice from all the rotten food she had just thrown out? I saw juice coming out of the rubbish bag. So she took a shower and then the shower curtain gave her a big hug. That was supposed to be the scarry but you kind of expect that sort of thing with showers. I thouth it was a bit weird as in which ghost would be deciding to wrap her in the shower curtain and why? To me the whole film felt like I'd watched it before. Even the kids bedroom in the basement with the closed door and wood panneling. Oh yes I thought what a bad mother to.

Terrible movie really. It was actually insulting.

Yes, she was taking a shower BECAUSE she got garbage juice on her. It was a really quick shot, but that's why she was taking a shower - I also think this was one of the things that supposedly actually happened in the real-life account.

As far as people complaining about this horror film, I'll say this:
a)I wasn't expecting Oscar-worthy soliloquys or Shakespearean monologues;
*Cliches - Let's be real - while there are some redundant-ass things done over and over again in films, given the fact that cinema (at least in the US) has been around for 100+ years now, isn't it somewhat logical that some techniques would be re-used? There's an old saying that says, "There's really nothing new under the sun" and this certainly applies to film, no matter HOW things are presented in film/what techniques are used to tell the story;
b)I was expecting to be transported into an experience - in this case, the experience of a family in a hellish (pun intended) predicament and the journey they would undertake to get through, and hopefully resolve that predicament;
c)I liked the special effects, and some of the techniques - am wondering if they did some rotoscoping, or shot some of it in sepiatone;
d)While there were SOME jump scares, there was some buildup;
e)I thought the backstory was interesting and I liked how they weaved it into the story - they didn't just use flashbacks, but they actually combined it into the present-day narrative;
f)Loved the effects where the walls and ceilings would get bloody and rusty - to me, that reminded me of Silent Hill (especially the scene in Silent Hill 3 the game, when Heather walks into that dark room with a mirror and all of sudden, the room changes;
g)Acting - while it was akward at times, and some of the characters' decisions didn't make sense, I thought back to this: what would I do if I was in a predicament like this, where I was in a family of 6, the pursestrings were extremely tight, and some otherworld entity was interfering? Personally, as soon as I heard, "Well, this house has a history", I would have tried to get the hell out of there, but sometimes we don't know what we'd do in a certain situation, until we actually find ourselves in it.

In closing, this film effectively (for the most part) pulled me into an experience that I was able to enjoy for a couple hours - therefore, that was sufficient enough for me. Also, compared to the Michael Bay-produced Amityville Horror remake, this film had only a few jump scares, and it did have some buildup and tension which are good qualities of a good horror film. While Bay is good at action, the only thing I liked in his Amityville was the opening montage - the rest of the film was pretty bad and had jumps every other minute.
