I'm sure he was going to be paying through the nose with alimony and child support. Most of their money was left in the bank anyway and he would probably have to give her half of it.

The wife did not withdraw the money that's why she had Neil go back to the car. Remember, after Abby reveals her scheme she tells Neil that he hasn't lost anything--the house, his career, the money, or Sophie just her. She wanted to punish him for his infidelities and make him feel like he made her feel.
