when brosnan first has gerry call "carl", obviously by the end you know it was his wife, doesn't he use brosnan's phone and wouldn't his wife recognize the phone number??

I don't know whose phone it was, but if it was Brosnan's phone, it's possible that it defaults to not displaying the number. Unless Neil dialed *82 (and, if he'd had time to think about it, that might have been a good idea, as it might enable them to trace the phone later by looking at caller ID), it would just show up as "private number".
