Brosnan AND Butler!!!

Now that's what I call box-office poison.

reply

Oh really? I just heard Butler's 300 had an opening day take of 27 million--not too shabby...

reply

$27,800,000. Yep, not too shabby.

reply

actually the movie 300 with gerard butler made over $93 million!

reply

300's takings have little if anything to do with Butler's participation.

reply

You must be joking, right? If not, please expand your opinion.

While I recognize there were many other fine performances in 300--and as long as they fit the mood of it, they are--Butler was the heart[/] of it, and you don't have to be a fan to see it.

Butler has never been a box-office draw, and 300 would be taking just as much without him. Audiences are not seeing 300 for any particular actor, even those involved in the production would admit that.

No he is not joking. Imo the credit for the amazing success of 300 SHOULD Go to the computer programmers who spent months and months in a house in Montreal and basically MADE the movie. I too believe it would have been as successful with pretty much any actor who went to the gym for three months straight prior to shooting.

You seem like a Butler fan and I am not trying to undermine him (and I know he has a big fan-club) but saying that he is the heart of the movie...I think not. Perhaps I think so because most of the people I know (and myself included), went and saw 300 regardless of the actors. Some of my friends still dont know who Gerard Butler is, even after watching 300.

Yes, I am a Butler fan. But whether people knew who he was or not, he brought humanity and heart to the story. If you don't care about the people--and all of them were very good--you're not going to care about the special effects.

Very true SnowMoon and anyway "Margaret Thatcher", Brosnan made a lot of money for the Bond franchise and was in Mrs. Doubtfire which made a pretty penny. If somebody like Orlando Bloom or Collin Ferrell were chosen for Leonidas, I don't think it would have done as well considering they each had an epic bomb and would not have been right for the role. Besides, if you look at films, most of the time a movie bombs beacuse so many factors bomb. Movies with unknowns do well because of the film, movies with big stars bomb because the movie sucks. A name and special effects aren't necesarilly enough to make people want to see it. I am a gerry fan but I don't own every one of his movies because as a whole I don't like all of them. That does not mean he's box office poison, the movies were either bad or just not promoted well. That is usually the hit or miss. Get an education. P.S 300 would have bombed if it did not have good actors or a good story.

reply

I had no idea who Gerald Butler was till I saw 300 and I will say he MADE the movie. I totally agree with the poster above who posted that with Colin or Orlando I doubt it would have done so well. And really does anyone think Colin would have the tenacity to train hard for 2-3 months?? haha I mean really.
Give him another hit movie and he'll be a megastar - mark my words and this isn't coming from a Gerald Butler fan - this is coming from someone who didn't even know he was. I sure do now though.

reply

I think that 90% of Hollywood actor could not have passed as King Leonidas. I think he did make that movie. He was believable as the character.

Good thought....i think Colin would have made an excellent Leonidas. Bloom would have made an excellent kid Leonidas... :D

reply

Well, blame thatcher is a known Gerry hater so I won't take any notice of anything he/she says.

Gerry was the heart of "300", he was superb. I know a lot of people who went just to see him as King Leonidas.
I cannot think of any other actor who could have made this role so real, so believable.

Pierce Brosnan is also well regarded. I don't think this will be 'box-office poison' at all.

I wouldn't even have seen 300 if it wouldn't have been for Gerard Butler... And he is gaining more and more fans because of that movie. There are many great performances in 300 and yes, the artistic cinematography is part of its success (approaching 200 Mio domestically and 400 Mio internationally!) but GB carries the movie with his strong performance. You can tell that the audience in the theater would follow Leonidas wherever he'd lead them.... no matter if they knew who GB is or not.

reply

haha, GB fanboys(girls) on the loose... :-)

reply

For one thing, Brosnan has two pretty big movies he's going to be doing....Topkapi Affair which is a continuation of Thomas Crown saga and he's been signed to be in Mamma Mia, which has a built in audience from it's very successful theater run.

Many people may still not know who Gerard Butler is, but even with all the special effects, good direction, and built in story, Gerard Butler's performance as King Leonidas did carry that movie. He didn't do it in the yelling scenes, or even the fighting scenes, although they were wonderful, but in the quiet moments of that movie. He provided an emotional center for a story that didn't have a great deal of character development.

I have not seen Butterfly on a Wheel, but I do know that he was marvelous in PS I Love You. Butler is different in every movie he makes and that to me is the sign of a good actor. He draws you in and makes you care about the character he plays and in the end, provides the emotional satisfaction necessary to have a good movie experience that sometimes stays with you after you leave the theater.

Don't sell him short.

Zonistonate,

How do you know that GB "was marvelous" in PS I Love You? It hasn't come out in theaters yet!

Gerard Butler was so great in 300. Compare him to how he is in some of his movies like this one, and you wouldn't recognize him at all. His voice is different, he acts so different and he looks so different. It's like it isn't him at all. He totally became the character. Yes, those who did the effects and computer animation and all that sure helped make the movie but it would be for nothing if the actors didn't perform all and they all did. All these factors help make the movie.

reply

Butler's 300 has made $431,000,000.00 worldwide. Poison, huh?

And Butler had nothing to do with it, the film already had a large fanboy audience regardless of him.

LOL TO TELL THE TRUTH I DO NOT LIKE WAR MOVIES (OF ANY KIND) I HATE MOVIES WITH BLOOD! AND I WAS ACTUALLY EXCITED TO GO SE 300 ONLY BECAUSE OF GERARD BUTLER:)

I recently saw BOAW, renamed Shattered for the U.S. It was very good. Brosnan was fantastic, Gerry very good. See my review in the other thread.

such butler fanboyism in here!
i didn't knew butler before 300 and i could care less if it was another actor
he played an important role on 300 but it didn't even cross my mind that the movie was all him
i loved 300 for the visuals and the thermopylae story, not for some particular acting
