I really enjoyed the movie, but I'm sure, I missed something, 'cause what was it that happend in Denver with the couple, that Butler doesn't want brought up?
It isn`t really explained in the movie but i think they lived in Denver and Nell had cheated on Abby but she forgave him and they moved.

Because it doesn't need to be explained, it made sense to me that she was referring to an earlier affair when they argued by the car because at the start of the movie he winks at his receptionist and not just in a friendly way.
She mentions Denver, he lashes out as though it almost ended their marriage then she is inconsolable laying against the car, clearly it wasn't something trivial like vacuuming up Sophie's hamster.
