Why was Brosnan's character Irish?

Early on I thought there might have been some IRA links, the way he was spying on Butler and how easily he beat him up but that obviously wasn't the case.

I know Brosnan is originally from Ireland but he left at a young age and doesn't have that strong an Irish accent in real life.

It was unnecessary and the really bad attempt at the accent just distracted from the movie all the way through. They should have had the two male leads switch roles and have Brosnan use his normal accent.
