Does anyone even remember the NY Cosmos theme song? I think it was by the Average White Band. Maybe not. I thought for sure it would have been included in the film, but no such luck. This has got to be the hardest piece of music to ever track down. If anyone has any info, please help.
We come from New York City/ Cosmos is our name/ We play so fast and pretty/ Soccer is the game/ Cosmos Cosmos Cosmos Cosmos Cosmos c'mon yeah/ Cosmos Cosmos Cosmos Cosmos (clap clap clapclapclap clapclapclapclap COS-MOS!
It is, indeed, performed by the Average White Band, but under the pseudonym "The Cosmic Highlanders." Issued as a 45 rpm under the Atlantic label in 1978 and the record jacket has a picture of the pre-season squad on the cover, a picture taken during their (annual?) pre-season stop at the Princess hotel in Bermuda. I don't think the filmmakers left out the theme on purpose; I think they just overlooked it and/or just didn;t know about it (it also wasn't referenced in the just-released Gavin Newsham book). AWB still tours with two of their original members (Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre), and I'm certain they would have loved to have had a snippet of the song included in the movie.
As someone who attended every game the New York Cosmos played, both home and away,in 1977, I was devastated when my now 40 year old son who used to be on the field with my German born American Husband wearing a SHEP shirt told me there is now a documentary about them. I trembled and smiled a silent smile thinking that the Cosmos theme was a tune that was played after every game entitled: Nobody Does It Better sung by Carly Simon Let me sing it now... And nobody does it better Though sometimes I wish someone could Nobody does it quite the way you do Why'd you have to be so good?
The way that you hold me Whenever you hold me There's some kind of magic inside you That keeps me from runnin' But just keep it comin' How'd you learn to do the things you do?
Oh, and nobody does it better Makes me feel sad for the rest Nobody does it half as good as you Baby, baby, darlin', you're the best
Baby you're the best Darlin', you're the best Baby you're the best
I did not realize that "Nobody Does it Better" was played at Cosmos games. Anyway, I wonder if the Cosmic Highlanders 45 is available anywhere, outside of finding it on Ebay. Also how could the producers have overlooked this when doing their research for the film? That would be like making a documentary on the NY Mets and not including the "Meet the Mets" theme.
