why did Gosling + Hopkins have accents in this?

Gosling as a Southern boy and Hopkins as an old Irishman. What was the point of that? Especially since each of them kept going In&Out of the accents. Totally kept me out of the movie. Am I the only one who noticed them?

First, you're too picky. Second, I disagree that they keep going in and out of their accents. I find Willy's sound endearing. I'm not sure why Crawford needs an Irish sound, but I liked it, and maybe it gave a certain added sinister quality.

Gosling is meant to be poor white trash that climbed the ladder of success. The southern accent tends to convey a simple upbringing.
