Bad Fantasy.
This, 'Eragon' and the first 'Dungeons and Dragons' movie - horrible, horrible films made as if Lord of the Rings never happened.

shareI completely disagree with you about Stardust. I don't really consider it to be the same type of epic fantasy as LotR. It's more of a fairy-tale type of fantasy, which calls for a completely different tone.
Eragon was definitely a disappointment. D&D, which I agree with you was "horrible, horrible," actually was released a year before Jackson's LotR hit the screens, so of course it was made as if LotR never happened.
This was a movie that could have been some type of Fairy Tale...dunno if that's was Gaiman was trying to do.
This in no way was anything like LoTR...
I've never seen Eragon or D&D, but Stardust is a fantastic movie. I've not yet read the book, so I don't know how it compares, but it is simply a great movie.
It is totally different than Lord of the Rings, and to be honest, I'd rather watch Stardust (although I like LotR, which may be 'better' movies in technical aspects at least). But why should the existence of LotR have any bearing on this movie?
It's not my fault that Buttle's heart condition didn't appear on Tuttle's file!
Eragon was an even bigger Star Wars rip off than the book and Dungeons and Dragons was a horrid movie. However, I LOVE Stardust. It is different than Lord of the Rings. It has more of a Princess Bride feel than a "save the world by destroying evil" theme.
That said, what do you mean by, "...films made as if LotR never happened"? I love LotR and think they are stunning films but I don't understand how that relates to Stardust.

This movie wasn't trying to take itself too seriously. It's more Princess Bride than LOTR.
shareCertainly fits more into the Princes Bride genre with a nod to Baron Munchausen, Time Bandits etc. na dI think that is where it will ultimately find itself. IMO it isn't up there with The Princes Bride though it might grow but I think it tries to do too much
shareDisagreed. While this is not as perfect as it could've been, it's a charming little film that works fine for what it is.

Personally I think LotR was a ripoff of Time Bandits, which was in itself a rip off of Legend. Legend ofcourse being a rip off of the Neverending Story which ripped off the Dark Crystal. Which were all rip offs of every fantasy story over 50 years since Walt Disney's Fantasia (or whatever it was called.)
Just because something had a fantastic setting first does not make it the end-all and be-all of the fantasy genre, I personally saw nothing comparable between Stardust and LotR other than gorgeous settings. The OP is a plop.

I recorded it off the TV out of curiosity, but expected to watch it for 30 mins before deleting it as I'm pretty fussy about films like this. However, I enjoyed it a lot more than expected and will look out for it on BRD now I think. It does successfully capture the feel of a fairy tale, something I felt the LoR franchise struggled with IMO. It's also a very funny film. Eragon was crap though. Haven't seen D & D, but the concept sounds bad.
shareI agree about Dungeons & Dragons being horrible, and Eragon could have been much better, but I disagree about Stardust which I thought was imperfect but delightful all the same.
