I want to ask two questions here.
1. Why captain Shakespeare pretends himself in front of others? (tell deeper meanings)
2.Can anyone help me compare the two characters? Captain Shakespeare in Stardust VS. Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland

I don't know about #2 but as to #1 it's similar to the theme in 'Princess Bride' where a pirate pretends to be bad.

His First Mate seemed to know the score as he corrected him publicly...
