HELP! Looking for title of fairytale film I saw as a child

The story is about a young beautiful girl who marries her Prince but she's not allowed to see him. He only comes to her at night in the darkness in her bed chambers & he made her promise not to look at him. She kept her promise for a while until her curiosity got the better of her & she peeked at him with a light. She saw a very beautiful & handsome young man but at that same moment, the Prince woke up & told her that she betrayed him. He then turns into an animal (I can't recall, maybe a black/dark bird?) & flees from her. The princess then vows to seek him, ask his forgiveness, & break the curse on him. She travels the world looking for him until her clothes & shoes are worn out, until her feet bleeds. She finally finds him (as a creature I think) & somehow she was able to break his curse & they live happily ever after.

Anyone remember the film? Or the fairytale? I can't seem to find it.

Give us a clue, about what year was it that you watched the movie? Not narrowing it down means you may have to wait a long time until the person of the right age group will read your question.

The details are slightly different, but I'm pretty sure you're remembering an episode of the series 'Jim Henson's The Storyteller', titled 'Hans My Hedgehog'. Fantastic series! Although that one's actually the pilot, so it's not as smooth as later episodes, but they're all worth seeing. (My personal opinion, though, is 'Hans my Hedgehog' is the weakest ep, and 'The Soldier and Death' is the BEST!)

I just looked on youtube, sorry, it's not there at the moment, but the Dvd's available. There are 9 European folklore stories, then another 4 Greek myths. You'd be surprised at high quality of actors who show up: John Hurt and Michael Gambon are the respective Storytellers in the 2 series, but then there's Derek Jacobi, Sean Bean, Steven MacKintosh, Miranda Richardson, French & Saunders, Joely Richardson, Jonathan Pryce, Jane Horrocks, etc, lots of wonderful actors! Even in tiny parts you've got people like Mark Williams and Gabrielle Anwar, for example. It's fun to spot them all. And then, of course, there's the inventive visuals and graphics work, and the incredible Creature Shop puppets. Nothing else like it.

Enjoy!

You're right, it is Hans My Hedgehog. My memory was very fudgy & perhaps embellished some of the story from other stories or something. I posted the same question on another board and someone recommended Hans My Hedgehog as well. It was uploaded on youtube.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the question!

This is also the exact story of Eros (cupid) and psyche. I've seen it dramatised on TV before, maybe as part of the series quoted above, I don't know. I love the story though, it's definitely one of the more 'fairytale-friendly' greek myths and probably the root of a lot of classic fairytales.
