Does Studio 60 take place in the future?

In the opening of the pilot for Studio 60 Simon says it's the show's 20th anniversary; he also asks if anyone has been watching since the show first went on the air in 1996. If both statements are true, the show took place in 2016 instead of 2006. Am I missing something?

It was 1986 when the show first started actually.

But Simon says, in the opening of the Pilot,"When the show first went on the air in 1996." I just listened to it again, twice actually just to make sure I wasn't experiencing some sort of mental block. The subtitles say 1986, but it sure sounds like 1996 to me. Maybe Simon was supposed to say 1986, but I don't think that's what he said. I've cranked up the volume and it sure sounds like 1996.

DL has a bit of an accent and a way of stretching his words. I'm pretty sure youre just hearing him wrong but I will be happy to pull out the DVD when I get home tonight to listen.

Trust me, he says 1986. The show deals with 9/11 and how Matt and Danny dealt with that, the Iraq war with the K & R episodes. It takes place in 2006.

I believe he was supposed to say 1986, but he said 1996. The title of the thread was intended to be ironic.

Addressing your point, if the show started in 1996 it would still include 9/11; it would not deal with the first Gulf War.

I've listened to it very closely and I'm not sure an accent can explain it. Phonetically the sounds are very different. I'm a teacher and one of my close friends is a speech therapist. I haven't actually had her listen to the DVD, but I did ask her about exactly what you're saying. She said that the way the sounds are physically made would make it difficult to mistake and she is unaware of any speech pathology that would cause that kind of mix-up.

I know I'm probably exhibiting a pathology of my own in this regard, but it's just something that bothers me every time I watch it. I know the script called for 1986, but I just don't think that's what he said.

Here is the opening of the pilot. Ignoring the Spanish sub-titles and just listening to the audio I simply do not understand how you hear 90 instead of 80. Despite your credentials and your friends...the only thing I can conclude is you have some un-aired pilot or something.

Listen to it again on this link and tell me if you're still here 90.

he says 86.

I'm going to have to accept everyone's opinion!

reply

Don't! We're just messing with you.

listened to the clip, but yeah it is an odd spin on it being honest but while it doesn't sound like he says 1986 it equally doesn't sound like he is saying 96 either, it's just that you are hearing the audio from behind the scenes of something that is being directed at other people so it makes it sound weird since they do have a fairly heavy filter on the sound.

Kinda like if you listen to bassy music from 2 rooms away it just sounds like 1 beat repeating but if you come to where its coming from you can clearly hear everything in the song, it's just you being put off by the fact that the speech he's making is directed towards the audience and you are meant to be far away from them rustling around the backstage.

I can't speak for the aired or DVD pilot right now but just watched the pre aired version and DL/Simon says 1986 not 1996 I have the DVD too but not as handy as the version on my pc or I would have checked that also but def 1986 clear as anything.

Allison Janey says something about the West Wing being off the air for about a year when she guest stars. It takes place in the time when it was aired.

reply

West Wing's series finale was in the Spring of 2006. Studio 60 premiered in the fall of 2006 and the The Disaster Show, the one Alison Janey host ran in May 2007. So it had been roughly a year since the show had been off the air by that point.

It takes place in the past as others have said.
