It's stupid not to watch a movie because you don't like subtitles

You're missing awesome movies. That is all.

The original Shutter is one of the scariest movies ever. This isn't scary at all.

i love subtitled movies-especially french ones. and those are usually the ones i see on cable. if i could somehow find other languages, i would. you hear all the time about how people learned english from watching subtitled american movies. on the other hand, i have a friend that loathes subtitled movies (well that's just one of his foibles) it's a big world out there and one should broaden their horizons.

I agree, the original was 1 of the scariest films I ever saw, the atmosphere & pacing was impeccable!

I never understood the problem. Once you get going, you forget your reading really. I can't stand dubbed films however, give me the subtitles or forget it.

It's the exact opposite for me, I have a hard time watching movies without subtitles, even if they're in english, which I have a thorough understanding of. I've been reading them my whole life and now I can only absorb the dialogue via text. I even watch my native movies with English subtitles because it's hard for me to register dialogue by hearing it.

I agree with you. While I don't always have to have the subtitles on for all films except foreign language ones, I find if I'm watching an English film for the first time on DVD, I'll always put the subtitles on so I can follow all the dialogue in case I miss something.

sorry but i dont like it. have to watch dubbed or remakes myself. i cant focus on whats on the screen when im reading text at the bottom...

It's nice that you've grown up with a healthy respect for foreign films. I'm imagining you right now curled up with your cat, watching French arthouse films.

But before you make such a harsh judgment against others--and I think "stupid" is a pretty rude thing to call strangers--think about WHY they might have such a preference regarding subtitles.

Something like 20% of American adults are considered functionally illiterate. ONE-FIFTH OF THE ADULTS IN THIS COUNTRY CAN'T READ, and you're encouraging them to watch more foreign films.

I'm one of the lucky ones who grew up in a well-funded school district, but I have poor hearing. When movie characters aren't speaking English, I have to spend more time with the subtitles, and less time watching the people speak. This means I often don't know who's speaking, which makes a movie hard to follow.

But thanks for calling me stupid.
