rick's wife was a piece of garbage..

she complains about her husband wanting to bang other women yet when he wants to have some adult time with her she fakes that she is asleep. hell, he should be out banging other women since she won't keep him happy at home. and then she throws at him this whole hall pass crap she uses that as an excuse to have a sort of mini affair with a baseball coach. she is whore.

She did not want to give him the hall pass. He wanted it so he could cheat. Maybe she didn't want to sleep with a guy who was constantly lusting after other women in front of her. She was still wrong but he drove her to it by wanting it himself.

i know right??
And the fact that she was leading on the baseball coach in the end was ridiculous.
As if she wouldn't have slept with him

But I thought Rick's wife ALSO did have an affair as well - just not in the movie but as a part of a backstory that got explained near the end of the movie.

Paige, the babysitter mentioned that Rick's wife had an affair with a "soccer" coach. So that was a guy different to the baseball coach we were watching in the movie.

Unless I heard wrong and Paige was talking about this baseball coach that we saw an she assumed the wrong thing?

Paige mentioned the baseball coach.

I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

She was a horrible character, I agree. She totally led on the baseball coach for her own self-esteem and as "payback" for thinking Rick was out sleeping around. Yes, the baseball coach knew she was still married and was not without fault, but she should have given him clear signals or message letting him know things would be just platonic -- not invite him in for wine and dinner.

Her whole revelation of "the hall pass was actually for me" is even worse this shows she is not being honest with her husband or even herself. Certain people who are this "wishy-washy" in real life actually end up doing way more harm then good in the long term. What I couldn't stand the most though was the total cop-out ending of her being Rick's only sexual partner... ever. This turns out to be some magical panacea to all their relationship troubles and is like something straight out of a woman's romantic fantasy novel. A far better ending would have been Rick turning down the Aussie only to meet up with his wife and have the half-naked baseball coach, getting dressed, coming out of the bathroom. However, it was probably always intended as purely fluff comedy with throw-away one-dimensional characters.

By the way, this is not a sexist thing. If it had been a male character, he would have been just as rotten and reprehensible. Rick's wife was just the worst of the lot as I see it.

"Rick's wife was just the worst of the lot as I see it."

I felt a degree of sympathy for her. She realises on the holiday to Cape Cod that she is experiencing some of the same feelings that her husband does and accepts that. Both Rick and Maggie realise they are both similar in that they can't have affairs without some form of emotional attachment. They are both good parents and ultimately (but predictably) realise what they have at home between them is more important than having hall passes etc.

I don't think it was a particularly good film and believe the Farrelly brothers have scaled greater heights in the past, but they do touch on some uncomfortable home truths and I liked that they attempt to give a female perspective and don't just go for a purely male point of view.

I hated both women--especially Sudekis' wife. After she had sex with another man, she actually had the nerve to make more requests from him while he was proclaiming that he would do anything for her. Then she gets agitated when he admits that he "fake chowed" another woman...seriously? I get that it was a funny moment, and I'm glad he got that in there before the movie cut to black, but I disliked her character so much.

And I agree that Rick's wife was also a really crappy person. He was noticing other women--so what?! When you're married, and especially that long, its hard not to. It doesn't mean that you are actually going to go bang other women, it just means you're a human being. Either way, she FORCED the Hall Pass on him. Thus, creating the entire situation, not only between them, but between their friends. Maybe she is the bigger monster here.
