Why does everyone think this is set in Nottingham?

I'm quite sure that old boat was at the seaside, the one Shaun skimmed a few stones from. It was one of the those pebble beaches... there may have also been a pier seen in the film, but it has been a while since I've seen the film so I may be gettin' this wrong.

The setting seemed very seaside though at times, like the sort of greasy spoon cafe the gang was in in at least one scene, maybe two or three, I thought that was not far from the seaside and it felt very much like a seaside setting, that particular scene.

I know that Thomas Turgoose was born in Grimsby, and there's a possibility (although I may be wrong about this) that Shane Meadows, despite being born in Uttoxeter, grew up in Grimsby for a bit. Could be wrong.

So yeah anyway, I have sort of felt like it's set in Grimsby for a while now, but I dunno' maybe it could be Hull right?

I always assumed it was set in Hull, I was surprised when I kept reading people saying it was Nottingham.

Because wikipedia states many scenes were filmed in Nottingham. Do they ever really state where they are?

Stay off the curb or get on the bus. Either way, I'm driving. Christopher Titus

90% of this movie is set in Sheffield, and some studio shots in Nottingham

The shots with the tower blocks in the back, and the beach are Grimsby/Cleethorpes. Lots of Grimsby shooting in the subsequent series and all.

The credits at the end of the film do specify that it was shot entirely in Nottingham and Grimsby.

IMO it's deliberately made out to be an ambiguous location within the East Midlands, neither one place or the other.
