Question for fans

Hey, fans of "Life on Mars."

I've never seen "Life on Mars;" learned about it from a friend.

Read the Wikipedia page devoted to it.

Have to ask -- is the appeal of the show that it presents a totally un PC world?

Where no one is Politically Correct?

According to Wikipedia, Gene Hunt, the "in the past" character, says un PC things, etc.

Please educate me.

Thanks.

And -- I'm not here to judge, I'm just interested in a cultural phenom.

People have listed the reason they liked it everything from the nostalgia factor (for those around Manchester in the 70s) to loving the charcters. LOM seems to be the type of show that all different sorts for a number of reasons. Pesonally I like the story and the characters. It was about Sam's journey, and it ended in a way that most shows wouldn't have the courage to do, which allowed for a really touching ending to the show.

From experience, I don't think a couple of clips will do it. I started watching the follow up series before I knew LOM existed, and because I saw Ashes described as a sequel I thought I should watch LOM first. It probably wasn't until the 3rd or 4th ep that I actually started liking the show. Then I found out half the ending with like four eps left to watch, and became curious to know how it got turned to still be a good ending.

From the clips I've seen on Youtube, they seem to be more bits that are just some fan favourites - lot of stuff where knowing the characters/full situation makes it better - but it's rare the clips display any of the show's depth. If possible, I'd recommend seeing a ep or two. It makes a real difference seeing the full situation instead of a 20 second clip that has a line or two. And while most of Gene's memorable moments are him being unPC or a jerk or insert-rude-word-here (which I think is most of what's on youtube) he does have a more flushed out character in the series, and has Sam there to balance him out.
