Originally in the U.K., there were plans to make 3 series of LoM, but John Simm only wanted to do 2. It was thus designed to only have 16 episodes.
The U.S. version was planned to be more open-ended, but ended up being cancelled.

Saw some eps of the US version and while it wasn't bad I feel they should have stuck with Colm Meaney as Hunt(as I understand this was originally the case), seems to me his style suits the character better.
