Was 1973 Real??? (SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!)

Episode one of series two Sam Tyler meets Tony Crane a guy he sends down in his other life for killing his wife. Tony begins to torture Sam in the future for revenge. To save himself he gets Tony committed (don't need a judge we can just lock em up) we then hear nurses and doctors talk about an psyche outpatient attacking 2006 sam his actions changed history he (Tony) never killed his wife so was 1973 real?

So whats your opinion? Real or a figment of his imagination I already made my mind up that his actions influenced the timeline I just wanted other peoples input.

I like your summary but I tend towards the dual reality theory that their were two Sams one in an alternate 1973 one in 2006 both linked by trauma, a car crash in 2006. We don't really know what happens to the 1973 Sam as we see him waking up but it is safe to assume car crash. Frank Morgan to me was Sams sub-consious trying to make sense of the two realities which where beginning to merge as the 2006 Sam begins to wake from coma. In an early episode of series two we learn that Some of Sams cognitive functions may be impared so more of the 1973 Sam returned to 2006 (An alternate reality to him) so it didn't feel real or look real to us even his mother seems cold he did make a promise and Sam Tyler always keeps his promises.
