explanation of ending

hi!
okay i've just finished watching Life on MArs - and maybe I'm tired as it's 2.30am! But could someone please explain to me what exactly happened? Am I right in thinking that Sam did create the 1973 world in his mind as he was in the coma and then when he came out of the coma he committed suicide to get back to the world he felt more real in in 1973?

You'll have to watch Ashes to Ashes to get the answers of how it works. LOM in the end was about what Sam prefers. And, in the end, he preferd the 70s.
You should watch A2A to get the bigger picture of the time travel/ Gene Hunt/ is it real elements of the story.

As of right now, the ending to LOM is kind of ambiguous and people have been arguing back and forth since it ended as to what really happened. The spin off series, Ashes to Ashes, is supposedly going to clear up as to what actually is going on. There are three more eps left in A2A.

Thanks guys! I'm just starting to watch Ashes to Ashes - on episode 3 of series 1! Miss Sam's character a bit but great to see Gene Hunt again! The 70s backdrop seemed to jump out a bit more to me in LOM but still enjoying A2A

A2A gets better. Series 1 is the weakest, sort of like they were just trying to get something on and give themselves more time to plan out later details.

I always viewed it as Vanilla Sky in reverse. In Sky, the main character embraced life; Sam threw his away. Which was a total contradiction to his established character, with him wanting to get back all throughout the first series. The ending was BS for me.

Sam felt more alive in the 70s which is why he went back.
He wasn't throwing it away, he was embracing it ! He felt empty in the present day.
