What are the best british series?

When I go to London, I like visiting HMV and I sometimes buy packs of British series, particulary the ones I can't find where I live (in Spain). What British series would you recommened? I love Rising Damp. Heard Porridge is quite funny too. I didn't like Cape Wrath, though.

reply

Blackadder
Red Dwarf (up to series 6)
Doctor Who is kinda fun.
Father Ted.

You might want to give the first one a miss.

If you are after something that's just a little different, then you should try The Mighty Boosh.

Did you just see a Hare Krishna midget in a tree.......floating? Or is it me?

Robin of Sherwood and Dick Turpin are the two best adventure series. There are loads of great sitcoms - try George and Mildred, Steptoe and Son, 15 Storeys High, Black Books, The IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh, How Not To Live Your Life

Merlin

Merlin is only a teenager and just discovering his magic. Magic itself is forbidden in Camelot by Uther Pandragon, father of Arthur Pendragon. Merlin befriends a dragon, who tells him he has to use his magic to save and guide Arthur.

Coupling

It's the english version of Friends.

Blackpool

It's a crime scene, family drama, musical mix. Hard to describe but nice if you like musicals. It stars David Tennant (the 10th Doctor of Doctor Who) and David Morrisey.

Doctor Who New Series

Doctor Who is a show about an alien timetraveller who saves the earth (and sometimes other planets) a lot. He chooses human companions (male and female) to travel with him.

Demons

Basically Buffy the vampire slayer with a male lead.

Foyle's War anyone?

Thanks everyone for some great suggestions so far !
As for my household ---
We've found "Inspector Lewis" to be a really enjoyable show.
For comedies, it's hard to beat "Are You Being Served ?"
When I was a kid, I also enjoyed "The Two Ronnies," though I don't know if the show is available on DVD......
Happy hunting !

"A bride without a head !"
"A wolf without a foot !"

reply

Thank you so much to all of you. You can stop suggesting now. I have more than enough suggestions.

reply

Peep Show, the funniest show ever.

reply

Ah, you can't close Pandora's box I'm afraid.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Cracker or Inspector Morse. Also try the 3 part mini series Red Riding.

reply

Inspector Morse is brilliant
Lewis is great too

a bit lighter is Midsomer Murders - very ironic crime show

Life on Mars obviously
Ashes to Ashes
Robin Hood 2008 is fun too if you don't take it too seriously - the beauty of it is that the show doesn't take itself seriously either.

Spooks is brilliant

Bit of Fry and Laurie for the fun of it

Faulty Towers
Blackadder

reply

Can't believe non have you have mentioned Only Fool And Horses

The names Bond... James Bond

reply

Well, many have already been mentioned (Auf Wiedersehen Pet - Series 1, Steptoe & Son, Blackadder, Only Fools And Horses, Midsomer Murders,...), some others that I really like are:
Inspector George Gently
The Sweeney
The Thin Blue Line
The Comic Strip presents...
The Young Ones
Bottom
Dad's Army
It Ain't Half Hot Mum
'Allo 'Allo!
You Rang M'Lord?
Yes Minister / Yes Prime Minister
The Goodies (unfortunately there isn't the whole series out on DVD yet)
Doctor In The House / Doctor At Large / Doctor In Charge (the TV series not the movies)
