Life On Mars enjoyed an average rating of 9.0 or above here on IMDb until the American version was released. LOM now has "only" an 8.8. I suspect that some of the viewers who were underwhelmed by the remake mistakenly came to the page for the British original and rated it down.
I'd suggest watching just the first two episodes to get a taste. Episode 1 is quite silly as it has to do the job of setting the premise for the entire series and introducting us to all of the main characters. All of that is out of the way by the second episode, so the show plunges right into its excellent story telling. Take two hours out of your life and judge for yourself!

All great really, it is one of my favourite British TV shows, you can buy the first series on Amazon for like £5, so you might as well give it a go.

Story is ~8 (I liked the American show, so I wanted to watch this
Characters were ~8 (they were amusing enough; I liked Simm from Dr. Who and Liz is cute)
Setting is ~5 (I don’t like the dirty 70’s)
Production is ~6-7 (The American version had a higher budget)
Overall it’s worth watching because at its base, it is a basic crime-drama, but has the intriguing aspect of the whole real-world/imaginary-world mystery.
