Is this the Manchester accent?

Everyone in the show has this distinctive accent, totally different from the usual posh harry potter-like accent in other british shows. I really like it. So is this the standard Manchester accent, or is there something else going on?

The accents aren't as strong as say, Liam and Noel Gallagher, and not all of them are Mancunian. Gene's is more of a generic northern accent; Ray's is probably the strongest Mancunian accent and the most recognisable accent of the cast I'd say. Sam's is quite a soft Mancunian accent.

I love children. I’m not a paedophile obviously; I just think they’re great.

OK, thanks!

They are all Manchester accents but from different areas of Manchester. I say that as a Mancunian (from Hyde coincidentally).

The posh accent you talk about is much more common in Hollywood than it is in real life. You are unlikely to hear that Potter and co accent out on the streets.

Where are you from, may I ask?

Really? Not even in London?

Croatia. I feel like adding "unfortunately", but that's a different discussion ;)

You would be lucky to find an English accent in London!

Seriously though these posh accents are only seen in upper class types, or news readers really. London has its own accents. See David Beckham, Danny Dyer, Ray Winstone.

I like how Colin Firth and Emma Thomson talk. I also like H.B.Carter's accent. They talk so clear that I can understand every single word.
But I like hearing the other accents too. I enjoy listening to Scottish people for example. I like J.Macavoy's accent :P

No....not in facking landan!

I've lived in Yorkshire for 5 years and I found that some are more distinctively Mancurian others are general Northern accents. Johns Simms is from Leeds, West Yorkshire but it's not much of a stretch to add a Lancastrian twang to your accent if you're from Yorkshire. I do like the northern accent though. Especially as I married a Northern bloke, champion!

The 'posh' accents you hear are as 'huzzie' said for hollywood, so Americans...any other country, can understand what's being said...apparenty, because regional accents can be hard to interpret in another countries.

But I think we should scrap the whole Upper class talk in films and tv, because other countries seem to think we all sound like that, they don't know the rich varieties in regional accents.

To other countries we either speak cockney or posh, it simply not so.

I don't know what accent I have, because I don't really listen to myself, I live in warwickshire, but according to others I might have a bit of a Birmingham twang.

I know the types of guys from the UK who take their vacations in Pattaya have very different accents from what you hear on Masterpiece Theater or the Merchant Ivory productions. They remind me a lot more of Gene Hunt than a fop like Prince Charles. My perceptions of Charles has been colored ever since they released those intercepted phone conversations of him tearfully drunk dialing Camila Parker Bolwes and bawling on about "Hey babe...I need ya babe."

Snap, huzzie. I love programmes set in Manchester.

Annie's accent sound more Yorkshire to me than Manchester. Not really surprising considering Liz White is from Rotherham.

I would say you hear a truly posh accent in Richard Curtis films like Notting Hill (how I loathe them).

reply

Both Dean Andrews and Liz White (Ray & Annie) are from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, so they arent doing a Lancashire accent at all!!!
Marshall Lancaster (Chris) is from Macclesfield so he does have more of a Lancashire accent.

Im from West yorkshire so all these northern accents sound normal to me. But I can also understand why they are popular to overseas audiences, especially when they are used to seeing us portrayed as poncey upper class snobs.

reply

I'm from Macclesfield and neither I nor any of my friends have a Lancashire accent...what with us not being from Lancashire.

It easy enough to imitate it from growing up there though - so I get your point.

They all speak in northern accents. John Simm was raised in the North West but the actor playing Gene Hunt is actually a cockney.

Its that man again!!

You are likely to hear those sorts of accents in Manchester yes. You only have to go a few miles and you can tell where you are by how the people sound.

Christopher Eccleston has a "typical" Manchester accent, even though technically, he is a Salfordian>

As already mentioned, Shameless is a VERY good and well written show to watch, give it a go and see if you can understand the lingo!

reply

You'd probably find more "manchester" accents in Salford. I live in Pendelton, a district part of Salford and I come across lots of different people who carry the manchester accent quite well.

As for Shameless, yes the accents are very manchester but this series supposed to capture Salford (the first series was filmed in city).

If you want something which carries manchester accents watch Coronation Street. You find half the cast walking around the Manchester Arndale shopping centre.

In his first episode on Doctor Who, Rose asked him, "If you are an alien, then how comes you sound like you're from the North?" His reply, "Lots of planets have a North."

reply

Can we have a bit less of the "typical Northern accent" comments please? I know you Southerners think that England ends after Yorkshire, but can I remind you that there are several counties after that which don't appreciate being lumped in with Yorkshire?!

There's trouble at' mill!

All i know is, English not being my native language, i had such a hard time understanding what they were saying sometimes.

English isn't my native language, and I could understand everything, not only from this show but from everything else thus far. I don't understand what people are fuzzing about. Different accents rule!
