Sam excluded, of course. But seriously, I know that this is set back in the 70s, but there is absolutely nothing funny about a woman getting groped by a perp. I couldn't believe how they were all laughing, when she was obviously upset about it. How cruel can they be? And listening in while she went to the bathroom? Sexual harassment right there. I can't believe Sam was the only one who didn't find their antics amusing.
Thats just how it was back then. Men had their place, women had their's. I'm not saying it was right, but it was a different world back then.
If you think that was horrible, don't watch Mad Men. That is set in the 1960's in Manhatten at an advertisment agents. Lots of sexism and racism in that. Not because people find it amusing or agree with it, but because that is what it was like back then.
Yorkshire is a place. Yorkshire is a state of mind.
Your reaction is exactly the one the creators were aiming for,it would be pretty much how things were in the 1970s,slightly exaggerated by Sam's perception of how the period would be.We are supposed to identify with Annie and realise that it is horrible. Gordon P. Clarkson
I watched a documentary of how female police officers were treated by male officers in the 70s/80s. One officer was seriously physically and sexually assaulted by a group of male offices (including high ranking ones) in the rec room they pinned her to the snooker table. This was in reaction to females being given roles exclusively given to males previously. The LOM team were boy scouts in comparison.
,it would be pretty much how things were in the 1970s
No, it wasn't.
Complete nonsense - I get a kick the way kiddies born in the 90's think they "know how it was back then" because they saw something on TV, or they read about some isolated incident that is now extrapolated to encompass the entire era by their micro brains.
BTW I just love Liz White - she is absolutely adorable in this show.
Your right it wasn't as overt as portrayed but there was an underlying culture present that this represents quite accurately. As they say a fish rots from the head and many situations were dependent on the management attitude which is why the worst offenders were the Police, high finance and armed forces.
I quite like that they showed it, even if it was a bit cartoonish. It is a better way of doing it than say... Call the Midwife ....which sugar coats the real issues of that particular era.
Show it for what it was rather than hide under the cloak of a modern mind.
Oh to be born in the 90s.... But then I would have missed out on Space Hoppers and Raleigh Choppers...
